Birmingham Welcomes New Faces to the Water Works Board

In an exciting announcement for the residents of Birmingham, Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has revealed the appointment of two remarkable individuals to the city’s Water Works Board. Starting from January 1, Dr. Andre McShan and Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon will be stepping into their new roles, bringing with them a wealth of experience and a strong dedication to the community.

A Vital Role in Our Community

The Birmingham Water Works Board plays a crucial role in overseeing the utility services that residents depend on every day. Mayor Woodfin stated, “The Birmingham Water Works Board performs a major role in the oversight of the utility for our residents. Drs. McShan and Gardner Witherspoon are committed leaders in our community with a proven record of cultivating and nurturing relationships for the greater good.”

Getting to Know Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon

Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon is currently shining bright as the associate dean and associate professor at the Orlean Beeson School of Education at Samford University. With a doctorate in educational leadership, alongside a juris doctorate, she is well-equipped for her seat on the board.

Her impressive resume doesn’t stop there! Previously, Gardner Witherspoon has held the influential positions of president and CEO of a nonprofit organization and a regional superintendent in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her extensive background in leadership brings a wealth of knowledge to the board.

When she’s not busy educating future leaders or serving on a plethora of community, state, and national boards, Gardner Witherspoon has been recognized with numerous awards for her contributions to leadership and public policy. Her passion for the community is evident, and her appointment is sure to have a positive impact on Birmingham’s water services.

Introducing Dr. Andre McShan

Next up is Dr. Andre McShan, who currently serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UAB. He brings with him a strong focus on creating healthy workers and safe workplaces, which is invaluable for the overall well-being of the community.

With his roles as medical director of the Workplace at UAB Highlands and co-medical director of UAB Employee Health, McShan is no stranger to high-pressure work environments. He is board-certified in occupational and environmental medicine, making him an expert in promoting thriving environments for both employees and the public.

Born and raised in Birmingham, McShan graduated from Ramsay High School before pursuing his studies at Morehouse College, where he earned a degree in biology, and later attended Meharry Medical College to obtain his MD and MSPH degrees. This hometown hero is not just a professional in the medical field, but also a committed member of several civic organizations. His involvement includes serving as a board member for the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club, the American Heart Association’s Southeast board of directors, the Jefferson County Medical Society, and the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham. Plus, he is a proud graduate of Leadership Birmingham.
