Connecting Youth to nature and Empowering Our Next Generation

Big City Mountaineers (BCM), acclaimed for their transformative programs oriented towards connecting under-resourced youth with outdoor experiences, is currently on the lookout for passionate volunteers and instructors in Birmingham. In the previous year, the organization declared its intention to launch its initial Southern programme in the Magic City.

Discover the Exciting Volunteer Opportunities with Big City Mountaineers

BCM expressly calls out to individuals who are enthusiastic about sharing the love for outdoors with the coming generations. The organization values all forms of backpacking experience, along with any history of working with young people. They are also searching for instructors who are open to obtaining their Wilderness First Responder Certification.

Volunteers working with BCM will have the opportunity to lead young people, ranging in age from 12 to 18, on a series of three diverse outings including: a day hike, a front-country camping trip, and a week-long expedition (lasting between 5 to 7 days). These thrilling experiences are planned to take place between April and June, in various locations within and around Birmingham.

The association encourages interested individuals to participate in the whole series (day hike, camping trip, and expedition) to foster stronger relationships with the youth beneficiaries of the programme. BCM is still accepting applications for trail and packing volunteers until March 15.

Introducing Margaret Cartner – The BCM Birmingham Programme Manager

Having served previously as a teacher at Huffman High School, Margaret Cartner is a local Irondale native, and has been assigned as the new Regional Programme Manager at BCM in Birmingham. In response to questions about the kick off of this first-of-its-kind programme in the South, she expressed her excitement and honour to be part of this incredible venture.

“Birmingham is endowed with an abundance of natural beauty and people who possess an enduring passion to sustain it for the long term. I could not be more eager to provide such opportunities to the youth of Birmingham, to allow them to explore our Magic City while discovering their inner strength and beauty,” Cartner explained.
