Sponsor Our ArticlesDespite a challenging 2024 season with a record of 3-9, UAB has chosen to keep Trent Dilfer as head coach for 2025. Athletic director Mark Ingram has expressed confidence in Dilfer’s potential, hinting at forthcoming changes to improve the team’s performance. Fans are hopeful for a turnaround after acknowledging recent struggles, including a disappointing 1-4 record against AAC teams. Future adjustments will be crucial as UAB aims to restore its competitive edge and regain its former glory.
In a surprising twist, UAB has decided to keep Trent Dilfer as the head coach for the upcoming 2025 season, despite the team’s rocky performance over the last couple of years. With a less-than-stellar record of 7-17 during his tenure, including a disappointing 3-9 finish in the recently concluded 2024 season, many fans are left scratching their heads.
Let’s face it, last season was rough! The Blazers faced some serious competition and suffered quite a few cringe-worthy moments, most notably a staggering 71-20 loss to Tulane and a painful 53-18 defeat to Memphis. It was a tough pill to swallow for supporters who expected better performance after a history of bowl appearances. Prior to Dilfer’s arrival, UAB enjoyed six straight bowl games and two conference championships under coach Bill Clark, so there’s a lot to live up to!
When you dissect the numbers, the outlook for the Blazers shows a stark drop in performance compared to previous years. In matchups against American Athletic Conference (AAC) teams this season, UAB has only managed a poor 1-4 record. They’ve been outscored dramatically, conceding a whopping 156 points while only managing to score 48 in those three AAC games. Ouch! It may explain why some fans are not feeling too optimistic about the direction of the program.
UAB’s athletic director, Mark Ingram, didn’t mince words about the need for improvement. He acknowledged the last two seasons have not met expectations but also expressed unwavering confidence in Dilfer’s potential. Ingram hinted that operational and staffing changes are in the works, and more investments will be made to bolster the program. It’s clear that some fresh strategies will be essential if UAB is to regain its glory!
Moving forward, there are whispers about who might step in if the situation doesn’t improve. Former interim head coach Bryant Vincent has been mentioned as a potential candidate, especially after successfully turning around ULM’s program. Many fans are hopeful that UAB can soon regain its foothold and the vibrant culture it had before Dilfer took over.
For those who might not remember, Dilfer wasn’t just brought in on a whim. He previously found success at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, where he led the team to three state title games in four seasons. So, the coaching chops are undoubtedly there, but translating that success to the collegiate level has proven to be a challenge.
As Dilfer reflects on his first two seasons, he has openly stated that he has learned a lot and is committed to implementing the necessary changes. This commitment is crucial if he hopes to turn things around and foster a winning culture that fans and alumni will rally behind.
Interestingly, the future of Mark Ingram may also be closely tied to how Dilfer performs moving forward. The pressure is on across the board as UAB looks to climb out of this slump and restore pride in the Blazer name. The foundation for success is clearly there, and only time will tell if Dilfer can rise to the occasion and lead UAB back to where it deserves to be.
