On May 31, 2024, a significant development took place at Birmingham’s Tuggle Elementary School, which has now added a unique spin to student wellbeing and mental health. In partnership with the University of Alabama’s School of Medicine’s Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center, they have designed and launched a calming room, a carefully structured space created with the objective of helping students manage their emotional distress. This provides Tuggle Elementary School students with a safe and secure environment, fully equipped with sensory-based materials, to support their empowerment over their emotional states.
Contemporary research increasingly rises to advocate for mental health support in academic settings. This ‘calming room’ seeks to contribute to that very cause, acting as a crucial component of the school’s infrastructure. Students diagnosed with mental health conditions will find this new addition a substantial aid in managing their emotions, especially during challenging periods. Special educators and mental health personnel from the Department of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) will be involved in using this calming room as a tool for supporting student mental health at Tuggle Elementary School.
Many students at Tuggle Elementary School are diagnosed with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). These conditions can often result in students expressing emotional and physical outbursts during school hours. The calming room, armed with evidence-based mental health resources of exceptional quality, is designed to provide a conducive space to help calm and soothe these students during their crises.
Having an on-site facility equipped to provide mental health resources can significantly decrease the need for students to seek such assistance outside the school setting. In doing so, it aims to eliminate some of the hurdles surrounding access to mental health resources. Tuggle Elementary School’s partnership with the University of Alabama’s School of Medicine represents a powerful stride forward in acknowledging and addressing the rampant need for such mental health resources within our schools.
The addition of this calming room is an innovative step for Tuggle Elementary School, setting a robust example for schools nationwide, while demonstrating the strength of partnerships between educational and health institutions in delivering necessary student support. The benefits extend not only to those students who require additional aid due to diagnosed conditions but for all students who can learn and leverage these tools to regulate their emotional health. The calming room is, after all, a step closer to providing every child in the school with a holistic learning and growth experience.
