Birmingham Community Reflects on Tragic Shooting and Recent Plea Deal
Birmingham, AL – A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the murder of local resident Shaun Rhudy, who was killed on Christmas Eve 2021 in a violent incident outside Marty’s PM, a bar located on the Southside of Birmingham. Rhudy, a beloved father and friend, was remembered for his kind spirit and joy for life, leaving behind a 9-year-old son.
Details of the Incident
The tragic event unfolded shortly before 3:30 a.m. on December 24, 2021. Birmingham South Precinct officers responded to reports of shots fired and discovered Rhudy unresponsive at the entrance of Marty’s PM, alongside another man who had also been shot in a parking lot across the street. Both victims were rushed to UAB Hospital. Unfortunately, Rhudy was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
According to authorities, Alonzo Johnson II, the man who fired the fatal shots, was denied entry into the bar due to a prior incident. This refusal escalated into a confrontation in the parking lot, culminating in Johnson firing a gun, which not only struck Rhudy but also critically injured another victim.
Legal Proceedings
Alonzo Johnson, originally from Greensboro, pleaded guilty to charges of murder and attempted murder. In a sentencing hearing, he was handed a sentence of 20 years in prison. The prosecution of the case was spearheaded by Jefferson County Deputy District Attorney Kylie Jernigan, while Johnson was represented by attorney Julian Hendrix.
Additionally, Terrill Huey Jr., aged 30 and from Moundville, pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution for his role in driving Johnson away from the scene of the crime. Huey received a two-year suspended sentence.
Remembering Shaun Rhudy
Rhudy’s family and friends have spoken frequently about what a deeply caring individual he was. Although he originally pursued a degree in engineering from Auburn University and worked in the field after college, he later shifted his career path to work in various local eateries on the Southside, prioritizing happiness over financial gain. His mother, Pat Rhudy, shared with the community how her son embodied an appreciation for all those around him, stating, “He was generally easygoing, non-judgmental, and liked everyone.”
A longtime friend of Rhudy, Chris Powell, also reflected on his character after the incident, noting, “He never worried about money too much. Never wanted to be rich. He just liked living life. That was the life he liked.” Rhudy’s legacy is now carried on by his young son, who is being supported by the community in the wake of this tragedy.
