Crews gear up for Thunder on the Mountain 2024

Preparing for Thunder on the Mountain

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -As America celebrates its Independence Day, Birmingham gears up to host the Thunder on the Mountain fireworks show, marking one of the most anticipated 4th of July spectacles in the city. For three days, crews have invested over 14 hardworking hours daily to ensure that every firework is spot-on for the big day.

For this annual event, thousands of fireworks are meticulously set to guarantee a thrilling 20-minute show, a task that requires precision and heavily relies on teamwork. This year, more excitement is in store as Vulcan, the city’s symbolic statue turns 120 years old, an accomplishment scheduled for a special tribute during the show.

A Balancing Act Between Fun and Safety

Setting up such a grand spectacle comes with its fair share of challenges, particularly weather uncertainties and health safety considering the heat. Geremy Gohlstin, the lead technician, highlighted how the team is prepared to execute the show in any weather condition, except lightning. To cope with the sweltering heat, hydration has become an essential aspect of their daily routine.

Aside from the obvious challenges, safety remains a priority when handling fireworks. Fireworks, despite being a popular source of fun during celebrations, are explosives capable of causing significant damage if mishandled. Guided by safety protocols, the team ensures professional handling, storage, and disposal of fireworks.

A Unique Celebration Awaits

This year’s Thunder on the Mountain is poised to offer a unique experience. The show will open with a wow moment setting the pace for a colorful display of fireworks synchronized with music, a spectacle that is sure to captivate audiences. The event will be visible from downtown Birmingham, Homewood, Five Points, Mountain Brook, and any location with a clear view of Vulcan.

For those unable to attend, they can catch the live action as it unfolds via WBRC FOX6 or the WBRC News apps. Crews have expressed excitement over this event, citing it as an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a thunderous display, which has become a cherished tradition over the years.

Firework safety at your fingertips

If you’re planning to light your fireworks, remember these handy safety tips as highlighted by Helen Fire Chief Chris Miller:

  • Never aim fireworks at anyone or any flammable items.
  • Ensure children below 18 years have adult supervision when lighting fireworks.
  • Before lighting fireworks on grass, wet the area first.
  • Extinguish fireworks using a water hose or bucket of water before disposal.
  • Never reignite a used firework.

Above everything, always remember to respect city ordinances regarding the use of fireworks. By doing so, injuries can be prevented, damage averted, and you can enjoy a safe and exciting Independence Day celebration.
