In a heartwarming move that’s bound to uplift the spirit of Birmingham, the city is teaming up with the California-based non-profit Urban Alchemy to tackle the pressing issues surrounding the unhoused, formerly incarcerated individuals, and those dealing with mental health challenges. It all starts with the Homeless Engagement Assistance Response Team, fondly nicknamed the HEART team. Kirkpatrick Tyler, Urban Alchemy’s Chief of Government and Community Affairs, expressed his excitement, stating, “Today represents go time, like really moving forward from being an idea or being a proposal or being something that has to pass through council.” He’s thrilled that this initiative is transitioning from the drawing board to real life, and Birmingham will soon witness teams actively working in the community.

Tyler mentioned that as the end of the year approaches, we can expect to see the HEART team hitting the streets. He anticipates that by early December, people will notice these compassionate individuals “walking around, building relationships and connecting with folks.” It’s about getting involved and making a tangible difference in the community.

Many members of the Urban Alchemy team have faced their own challenges, having experienced long-term incarceration or homelessness in their past. Ian Clark-Johnson, an Urban Alchemy Practitioner, shared how these experiences have given him a unique perspective. He believes that this emotional intelligence allows them to better assist those who are struggling. “It is always encouraging to hear from people that have that lived experience that want to give back,” he said. “It is purpose-driven work. It is not just a job; it is really about the connection with the community and re-empowering the community.”

Once the program kicks off, the HEART team will be on call for about sixteen hours a day. This commitment promises not just response, but proactive engagement with the community.
