Birmingham residents have a reason to celebrate as Slutty Vegan is gearing up for its much-anticipated reopening. The popular plant-based restaurant at 5 55th Place South in the Woodlawn neighborhood will officially swing open its doors on Friday, October 18, after a temporary closure that began in June for “operational changes.”
The reopening will kick off with a soft launch on October 18, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., allowing customers a chance to enjoy their well-loved menu items ahead of the official grand reopening. The celebration will continue the following day, October 19, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., marking the restaurant’s return to the community following a summer hiatus.
After the grand reopening, Slutty Vegan will establish its regular business hours, welcoming customers from Tuesday through Thursday noon to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday noon to 9 p.m. The restaurant will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
In a reassuring move, a representative from Slutty Vegan confirmed that the business reached out to all Birmingham-area staff members who were in good standing prior to the store’s closure, offering them positions at the reopening. This signals the restaurant’s commitment to its team and the local workforce.
While this isn’t the first time Slutty Vegan has closed its doors temporarily, it demonstrates the resilience of this thriving establishment. Earlier in 2023, the restaurant faced a four-day closure due to mechanical issues, and in 2024, it again had to pause operations for several days due to technical difficulties. The Birmingham location also dealt with an act of vandalism last year. Despite these setbacks, Slutty Vegan remains a beloved choice for many in the area.
Slutty Vegan made its mark in Birmingham when the food truck first rolled into town in 2020. During those pop-up events, eager customers often lined up for an average wait time of two hours to savor the restaurant’s unique offerings. Following the success of those events, Slutty Vegan planted its roots in Birmingham by opening a permanent location in August 2022—making it the first outlet outside of Atlanta, its original home.
Owner Pinky Cole shared insights on the journey, stating, “Birmingham was the springboard to be able to identify things will be different. I was used to Atlanta systems, county and state taxes. So coming to Alabama, the laws and permits are set up differently.” She added that it took over a year to navigate these “learning curves,” but now she feels the restaurant has “arrived” and is “past the toddler stage.”
Since its Birmingham debut, Slutty Vegan has expanded with several locations across the country, including Dallas, Harlem, Brooklyn, and even at Spelman College’s campus. Known for their “bangin’ plant-based” burgers, fries, sandwiches, sides, and desserts, Slutty Vegan has crafted a niche for itself in the restaurant landscape, especially among those seeking delicious vegan cuisine.
With its reopening on the horizon, Slutty Vegan is set to once again become a busy spot for veggie lovers and curious eaters alike. For those excited to try their renowned dishes, mark your calendars for the soft opening on October 18 and the grand reopening on October 19—a delicious opportunity not to be missed. This beloved establishment’s return signifies more than just the reopening of a restaurant; it represents the resilience and determination of the Birmingham community it serves.
