BE PREPARED: Severe Weather Expected in Birmingham Metro Area Tuesday Afternoon

Birmingham city heads into a possible tumultuous weather period as the U.S. National Weather Service’s Birmingham Office alerts a potential for severe storms across Central Alabama on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 2.

Darker Clouds Overhead

The Spring weather in Alabama has been treating its residents to mostly sunny and temperate conditions, but April marks the start of peak tornado season in the state. Historical data indicates an increased weather volatility in Birmingham during this month, with two of the most destructive tornado outbreaks in Alabama’s history occurring on April 3, 1974 and April 27, 2011.

According to the latest report by the National Weather Service, residents of Central Alabama, including the Birmingham metro area, could witness:

  • Damaging winds
  • A few tornadoes
  • Large hail

Birmingham is bracing for the first set of storms to roll in around 4PM Tuesday, April 2 with the weather expected to continue through to 2AM Wednesday, April 3.

Preparation is Key

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to keep themselves safe during potentially severe weather conditions. The following steps can aid preparedness for the incoming storm:

  • Begin charging your electronic devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and radios, so you have access to essential information even in a blackout scenario.
  • Develop and communicate a well-defined plan within your family. This should include an emergency meeting place and related information. For those living in mobile homes or homes without a basement, nearby safe buildings, like churches or family households, should be identified in case of an emergency.
  • Ensure that pets and family members are brought indoors, lock doors and close windows and vents. If possible, seek shelter in an internal room with minimal windows.

For comprehensive detailed tips on how to prepare for severe weather, residents can refer to Bham Now’s severe weather guide.

Stay Safe, Birmingham!

Birmingham residents should keep an eye out for further updates from the U.S. National Weather Service’s Birmingham Office. It is always recommended to stay vigilant during extreme weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Bham Now urges locals to stay indoors, ensure the safety of their families, pets, and property, and monitor future announcements. We hope for safe passage through the weather for all residents and remind everyone to look out for one another during these times.
