The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) has officially opened applications for the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program, and the waitlist is open for the first time since 2020. So, how does this lottery thing work? Well, after the application period wraps up, 3,000 applicants will be randomly selected to be added to the waiting list for housing assistance. It’s great to note that you won’t just be chosen randomly without any qualifications; you will still need to meet specific criteria based on your income and household size.

Criminal Background Check Required

Before you get too excited, keep in mind that all applicants must pass a criminal background check to qualify for a voucher. Once you’re in, successful applicants will receive a voucher that you can use to rent from a private Section 8 landlord of your choice anywhere in Jefferson County.

What About Those Already in the Queue?

Now, you might be wondering about those who were on the waitlist back in 2020. Well, good news for them too! As per HABD’s announcement, there are currently less than 200 people remaining on the general Housing Choice Voucher waitlist from the last time it was open. This means they will be the first to be contacted when the Housing Authority is ready to pull them from the list.

In a recent statement, Larry Williams, the Chief Housing/Programs Officer at HABD, expressed enthusiasm about the opening of the waitlist. He said, “By opening up the waiting list, we can allow families to gain housing as a part of our Home for the Holidays initiative. We urge all eligible individuals to apply during this time. We are excited to offer some relief to our community, especially as the holidays approach.”
