Sponsor Our ArticlesHoover city commission has greenlighted a comprehensive market study for the Riverchase Galleria, responding to evolving retail dynamics. The $200,000 study by the Hunden Group aims to assess not only retail but also hospitality, residential, and entertainment potential as the Galleria adapts to the changing landscape. With support from key local stakeholders, this initiative seeks to revitalize the area and open up new possibilities for community engagement and economic growth.
Hoover is buzzing with excitement as the local city commission has approved a comprehensive market study focused on the Riverchase Galleria, a shopping hub that’s been a staple in the community since the mid-1980s. The hustle and bustle of retail life has certainly changed over the years, and the city is determined to keep this economic engine running strong.
The study, which comes with a budget of up to $200,000, is being conducted by the renowned Hunden Group, a consulting firm based out of Chicago. Out of nine proposals submitted for the project, Hunden Group stood out, impressing officials with its plans. The study has gathered a coalition of supporters, including Brookfield Properties, the Riverchase Business Association, the Hyatt Regency-Wynfrey Hotel, and Jim Wilson & Associates, who will contribute $31,000 towards the effort.
Mayor Frank Brocato has pointed out a crucial fact: shopping malls are seeing a decline in popularity across the country. However, the Riverchase Galleria remains a vibrant shopping destination, much loved and frequented by locals. Online shopping has shifted many customers’ habits, impacting traditional brick-and-mortar stores. As retail landscapes evolve, the Galleria needs to adapt to thrive and remain relevant.
The upcoming study aims to take a deep dive into not just the retail market, but also areas like hospitality, residential, and entertainment. With several vacant spaces in the Galleria, it will be important to identify what types of stores might fill those gaps and attract even more visitors.
Throughout its years, the Galleria has faced challenges, including strong competition from newer retail locations popping up in the Birmingham metro area. While the Galleria proudly houses the last Macy’s in Alabama, it’s clear that a fresh vision is needed to keep its spirit alive. Previous instances of violence, including very unfortunate incidents in 2018 and 2020, also contribute to the need for revitalization efforts to restore confidence in the safety and vibrancy of the mall.
This study isn’t just about retail; it’s also looking at transforming the Galleria area into a lively, walkable space. Officials are currently looking at the “Main Street Hoover” concept, a brilliant idea that aims for a mixed-use urban environment. It’s exciting to think about a future where residents can enjoy leisurely strolls, dining, shopping, and entertainment—all within a friendly community setting.
The study is expected to wrap up in about four to six months, and once that’s done, city officials plan to gather with stakeholders to discuss what’s next. While the Galleria has undergone major renovations in the past, including over $120 million invested in upgrades between 2012 and 2013, the new study will look into phased developments that enhance the quality of life in Hoover.
Interestingly, there have been past conversations about relocating a hospital to the former Sears location at the mall, showcasing the city’s proactive stance in exploring diverse options for the area. The local council has committed approximately $168,725 for the redevelopment study, signaling a collaborative approach aimed at fostering a future filled with new possibilities.
As Hoover moves forward, it’s worth noting that new projects are underway, including a Home 2 Suites by Hilton hotel located near the Galleria, with more hospitality developments on the horizon. The vision for the Riverchase Galleria is not just to look back at its historic glory, but to carve out a vibrant and sustainable future that serves the entire community.
With all these exciting plans in the mix, residents of Hoover and beyond have plenty to look forward to as the city continues to embrace change and opportunities!
