Tuscaloosa, AL – U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, AL-07, joins forces with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) during National Cancer Survivors Month to focus on the most recent advances in pancreatic cancer care and stress the significance of early detection and screenings. This comes as part of Rep. Sewell’s efforts to enact the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act.
Rep. Sewell’s visit to UAB is aimed at frontline developments in pancreatic cancer care. During her visit, she will tour UAB’s Pancreatobiliary Disease Center for a comprehensive briefing on the latest initiatives in cancer screening and care by UAB officials.
Representing Alabama’s 7th Congressional District, Rep. Sewell is leading a crucial legislative movement to ensure seniors have access to groundbreaking cancer screenings. Her initiative, H.R. 2407, the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act, promises to bring about significant changes in the medical field.
The bipartisan bill is named in honor of Rep. Sewell’s late mother, a victim of pancreatic cancer in 2021. It aims to create a pathway for Medicare coverage of novel blood-based cancer screenings. These tests present an opportunity to diagnose cancer earlier than traditional methods, ushering a new era in the fight against cancer.
H.R. 2407 secures the support of a considerable number of lawmakers and organizations across the nation. It is cosponsored by 276 members of the House of Representatives and 61 Senators, demonstrating bipartisan endorsement. Over 500 organizations nationwide have also extended their support towards the bill.
The research and advances in pancreatic cancer care will be discussed as Rep. Sewell visits UAB:
