Regina Celebrates Rolan Milligan Jr.’s Remarkable Comeback Season

On the vibrant fields of Regina, excitement is buzzing this season, especially with the recent achievements of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ very own Rolan Milligan Jr.. Even though he didn’t make it to the Grey Cup showdown this year, he’s still riding high after clinching the title of the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the 2024 season. What a feat!

A Journey of Resilience

Milligan, known for his tenacity on the field, has been through quite the rollercoaster ride. Just a year ago, he found himself sidelined for almost the entire 2023 season due to a pesky foot injury. But instead of letting it overshadow his spirits, Rolan transformed that setback into a setup for a sensational comeback in 2024. He not only bounced back but soared above and beyond, leading the Canadian Football League (CFL) with an impressive eight interceptions throughout the season.

In addition to his interception prowess, Rolan wasn’t just a defensive powerhouse; he also racked up 71 tackles on defense and contributed 20 tackles on special teams. When asked how it felt to be recognized for his hard work, Milligan shared, “It feels great getting the recognition for all the work I put in coming from the injury and becoming a better version of myself this season.” His journey to this point has been more than just physical recovery; it’s been a mental grind to stay focused and determined.

A Unique Background

Rolan’s path to becoming a star halfback is as unique as it is inspiring. He began his collegiate journey at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) before transferring to the University of Toledo. His dream took a twist when he tried to break into the NFL. After impressing the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted rookie in 2016, things didn’t go as planned due to an injury in training camp. Despite a series of challenges, including stints with the practice squads of the Detroit Lions and the Indianapolis Colts, he never surrendered his aspirations.

After a challenging few years with injuries and roster movements, Rolan finally found a home with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. It’s been a match made in football heaven ever since. Speaking about his time with the Roughriders, he remarks, “Once I realized I would be fine, it was just making sure that once I started training I had to lock back in and be who I am.” His grit and determination seem to resonate not only with fans but with teammates as well.

The Ending of the Season and Looking Ahead

As we wrap up the 2024 CFL season, the spotlight shifts to the Grey Cup, where the Toronto Argonauts will be taking on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The championship game is set to kick off at 5 p.m. CST this Sunday at BC Place in Vancouver. While Rolan may not be on the field for this high-stakes matchup, the legacy of his comeback season will undoubtedly echo through the Roughriders’ camp and the CFL as a whole.

As Regina buzzes with anticipation for the upcoming game, Rolan Milligan Jr. stands tall, emblematic of resilience and hard work. His rise from adversity serves as an inspiration for many, proving that with perseverance, even the toughest of challenges can be conquered. The football world will be watching, and if this season was any indication, Rolan’s story is just beginning.
