Birmingham, Alabama, is buzzing with excitement as Refresh Clothing 2 marked its 10th anniversary on October 3. Celebrating alongside was owner Corey Bishop, who also commemorated 25 years of entrepreneurship on the same day. The Five Points West flagship location has become a vibrant community hub where Bishop is known for personally greeting customers by name and understanding their unique styles.
Located at 2247 Bessemer Road, Refresh Clothing 2 has achieved a remarkable milestone in its decade-long operation. Bishop shares that the store is not just a clothing retailer but a reflection of the community’s spirit. “I’ve intricately woven the lessons I’ve learned into a new vision for the future,” he expressed. His commitment extends beyond sales; it includes crafting the style and identity of customers ranging from ages 6 to 75.
Before opening Refresh Clothing 2, Bishop faced numerous personal challenges, which he has transformed into an inspiring narrative of resilience. He moved into this location after the departure of the family-owned Music-n-More and saw an opportunity to build a business from the ground up. Influenced by mentors like Eric Walker, Bishop recognized the importance of mentorship in guiding new entrepreneurs. “Having a mentor is important. I had to change my mindset,” he noted.
To enhance his business acumen, Bishop participated in numerous programs, including the TeamUP initiative offered by the Birmingham Business Alliance. This program equips local organizations with the tools to foster effective teamwork and exceptional service. “The day you stop learning is the day you die,” said Bishop, emphasizing his commitment to continuous self-improvement. He aims to pass on his knowledge to upcoming generations of business owners.
Bishop grew up in Birmingham and has a strong vision for the Five Points West area. He hopes to see it transform into a destination filled with vibrant businesses rather than a mere pass-through. “It’s in the air,” he remarked, perceiving a shift toward stability and growth in the community. “We deserve that,” he added, underscoring his optimism for the future.
Alongside Refresh Clothing 2, Bishop is expanding his entrepreneurial footprint by partnering with Reginald Davis to introduce Twice as Nice Water Ice, a local favorite serving up flavored ice with a unique Birmingham twist. He actively participates in the Five Points West Chamber of Commerce to stimulate local business and boost community engagement.
Bishop has also launched various initiatives to foster collaboration among local businesses. These include The Big Homie Podcast, featuring street perspective news, and collaborations with services like Frame by AB for photography and videography. He works closely with local fashion designers like Ace the Seamstress and home-based brands such as Kritical Love and Heartful Echos. His efforts also include offering resources through Zack’s Digital Dashboard, providing essential design services to fellow entrepreneurs.
Bishop’s approach embodies the principle of paying it forward, inspired by those who supported him when he embarked on his journey with Refresh Clothing 2. As he reflects on the past and looks to the future, Bishop remains dedicated to enriching the Birmingham community and encouraging new generations of entrepreneurs.
