Birmingham Community Unites for Education at Prince Hall Masons Event

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, hundreds of Prince Hall Masons from across Alabama gathered at the halftime of the Miles College versus Lane College football game in Fairfield, Alabama. The occasion was marked by a significant show of support for education, as the organization presented a ceremonial check for $10,000 to Miles College.

Support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

The donation is part of the annual Prince Hall Americanism Classic game, which returned this year following a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event symbolizes a longstanding partnership between Prince Hall Masons and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the state.

The ceremonial check was presented to Miles College President Bobbie Knight and Dr. Steven Hairston, Vice President of Institutional Advancement & Development. Among those presenting the check were Corey D. Hawkins, Sr., Esq, Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F&AM of Alabama and Shirley W. Pratt – Grand Worthy Matron of the Mizpah Grand Chapter, alongside other esteemed members of the Masons.

A Proven Track Record of Support

This recent contribution brings the total donations from the Prince Hall Legacy Foundation to $60,000 aimed at supporting student scholarships and academic programs at Miles College. Generous contributions such as this are critical for providing resources to HBCUs, which play a vital role in higher education, particularly for African American students.

Gerald Beal, Worshipful Master of New Beginnings #970 of the Prince Hall Masons, emphasized the significance of this ongoing partnership. “The Grand Lodge is located here in Birmingham, and with many brothers and sisters on staff at Miles College, we are proud to continue our partnership with them,” Beal stated. This sentiment underscores a commitment to ensuring access to education for young learners and empowering the local community.

Promoting Brotherhood and Community Involvement

During the event, Corey D. Hawkins, Sr., shared that the Masons are dedicated to promoting brotherhood and aiding community efforts. “We are still here promoting brotherhood, working in the community and providing scholarships,” he said, reinforcing the organization’s mission to uplift students through educational initiatives.

The atmosphere at the football game was festive, with Masons proudly wearing their regalia, a visible reminder of their commitment to service and education. Families gathered in support of the student-athletes, while also recognizing the importance of educational support from community organizations like the Prince Hall Masons.

A Bright Future for Students

The donation not only aids in scholarship opportunities but also serves as an inspiration for students pursuing their higher education at Miles College. As more funding becomes available, it allows the school to expand its academic programs, invest in facilities, and enhance the educational experience for all students.

As the final quarter of the game approached, it was clear that the spirit of community support shone brightly. The partnership between the Prince Hall Masons and Miles College exemplifies how organizations can come together for a greater cause—one that focuses on the well-being and education of future generations.

Conclusion

As the sun set over Fairfield, it became evident that the love for education and community was alive and well in Birmingham. The successful turnout and generous contributions signify that, united in purpose, the Prince Hall Masons and the community will continue to uplift local students for years to come.
