Pelham City Council Approves Salary Hike for Mayor and Councilmembers!

Hey there, Pelham residents! Exciting changes are happening in our city, and we just had to share the news! At a city council meeting held on Monday, November 4, the Pelham City Council made a big decision that’s bound to impact the future of our local leadership. That’s right! They unanimously passed an ordinance to boost the salaries for both the mayor and councilmembers!

New Salary Structure Revealed!

So, what does this mean for our beloved city leaders? The newly established base salary for the mayor will be set at a cool $75,000 a year! Meanwhile, the city council president will earn $13,000, and the rest of the councilmembers will take home $11,500 annually. Not too shabby, right?

But wait, there’s more! In addition to these increased salaries, the mayor and council will also be eligible for the same insurance benefits that full-time Pelham city employees enjoy. Plus, they’ll receive Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) like all city employees across the board. So it’s safe to say our city leaders will be well taken care of!

A Slight Wait for Implementation

Now here’s the twist—this salary increase won’t kick in until November 3, 2025. It sounds like a while away, but City Council President Maurice Mercer explained that by law, they have to set these salaries for the next term of elected officials. “For anyone here this evening who may or may not have been at the last meeting,” Mercer said, “we’re required by law to set the salaries for the potential mayor and council that would be elected next term.” So for now, those currently in positions don’t need to worry about any immediate cash flow changes!

A Look Back: Salary Comparisons

Now let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see how far we’ve come! The base salaries for the city’s leadership were last established back in 2016. Back then, the mayor made $45,000, while the city council president earned $10,800, and other councilmembers took home $9,600. Comparatively, with the new adjustments, this change marks a significant jump. In fact, the mayor’s salary will jump by a staggering $21,775.13 come 2025!

The city council president’s salary will see a smaller bump of $226.01, and the other councilmembers will enjoy an increase of $145.34. In addition to that, the mayor will be receiving a monthly stipend of $500 for vehicle and fuel allowances instead of a city vehicle. Talk about perks!
