Birmingham, Alabama, experienced a night filled with chaos and heartache that bled into the early hours of Wednesday morning. In the latest of several alarming incidents, a 50-year-old man was fatally shot during a gathering at his home. This tragedy has left the community shaken and concerned.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Arlington Jerome Daniel. The incident occurred at approximately 2:13 a.m. on the 6800 block of 68th Street South, which is situated just off Exeter Avenue. When officers from the city’s East Precinct arrived on the scene, they discovered Daniel on the floor of his home, a victim of an apparent gunshot wound.
According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the police investigation revealed that the deadly altercation took place during a gathering at Daniel’s residence. “There was some type of get-together at the residence when an argument erupted,” Wade explained. “Shots were fired, we believe, inside the residence as well as outside of the residence.” The city’s gunfire detection system known as Shot Spotter registered at least 14 shots fired.
Several witnesses are currently being questioned by detectives as the search for answers continues. As of now, no one has been taken into custody regarding the shooting. According to Sgt. Wade, it appears that Daniel lived at the home where the gathering took place. In a heartwarming yet sad twist, animal control was also called to address the presence of a dog and her puppies who were inside the home—authorities felt it necessary to ensure their safety amidst the chaos.
This latest shooting is part of a disturbing series of violent incidents that have rocked Birmingham in just a matter of hours. Just four hours earlier, a male and female were found dead inside a bullet-riddled vehicle on the city’s west side. Furthermore, a 17-year-old boy was critically injured when gunfire erupted during a fight outside Woodlawn High School following a basketball game. In yet another incident, another man was shot and subsequently found wounded after crashing his vehicle into a Family Dollar store in northern Birmingham.
The chilling reality is that Daniel’s slaying marks the 139th homicide in Birmingham this year alone. Disturbingly, ten of those cases have been deemed justifiable and not classified as criminal. Just the other day, the city reached a somber milestone when the number of homicides this year surpassed that of all of 2023—with still more than a month left in the calendar. It’s a horrifying wake-up call for both residents and law enforcement in Birmingham.
205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
As this story continues to develop, residents of Birmingham are left grappling with the aftermath of an incredibly violent night. The hope is for healing and for the community to come together in solidarity to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future. Birmingham’s citizens deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities, free from the fear of gun violence.
