New Retail Gems Brighten Up Birmingham’s Shopping Scene

Birmingham is buzzing with excitement this year, thanks to a fresh wave of retail spots opening their doors across the city. From cozy bookstores to specialty boutiques, there’s something for everyone in the Magic City. Let’s take a closer look at some of these charming new additions that are making shopping a delightful experience.

The Burrow Bookstore – Leeds

First up is The Burrow Bookstore, which opened in downtown Leeds this past June. This quaint shop specializes in new and gently used books, games, puzzles, and all things “bookish.” Owners Andi and Josh Argo, who are avid Harry Potter fans, envisioned a welcoming space for the community. Andi mentions, “We welcome people to come work, study, read, or meet together with others in our space.”

One unique aspect of The Burrow is that they only stock books with a rating of 3.5 stars or higher on Goodreads. “Life is too short, and my TBR (To-Be-Read) list is too long to waste time on a bad book!” Andi adds. Visitors can enjoy story time for kids, work on a community puzzle, or sip tea while browsing their next favorite title.

Carver Jones Market – Fairfield

Next, we have Carver Jones Market in Fairfield, which aims to tackle food accessibility issues while promoting sustainable practices. Opened by James Harris, the market provides a wealth of fresh produce and everyday groceries all in one spot. Harris chose Fairfield because he wanted to empower the local community. Shoppers can expect quality food options at prices that won’t break the bank.

Happy Links – Lakeview

In Lakeview, the hot new trend of **permanent jewelry** has found a home at Happy Links. Owners Sabrina Smith and Hannah Stallings offer custom-fit permanent jewelry and curated ear piercings in their stylish salon boutique. Using a specialized micro-welder, they secure pieces like bracelets and necklaces without clasps, allowing for a unique and lasting experience. “We fell in love with permanent jewelry on a girls’ trip four years ago in Colorado and wanted to bring that experience to Birmingham,” Hannah explains.

Plenty of Vino – Downtown Hoover

Over in Downtown Hoover, Plenty of Vino invites patrons to explore an enticing combination of wine and plants. Since relocating to 2nd Avenue North in March, this gift shop has become a go-to spot for wine lovers and plant enthusiasts alike. Their knowledgeable staff is eager to help customers find the perfect pairing for gifts or personal enjoyment, and they also host a variety of workshops.

Goodies Toy Store – Homewood

For families looking for a fun outing, Goodies in Homewood offers an interactive toy shopping experience. Located across from Central Park, this play-concept shop allows children to fill pails with small toys from clear plastic tubes lining the walls, much like a candy store. Kids can then test their new toys in a dedicated play area while adults relax over complimentary coffee.

Mizzen+Main – The Summit

If menswear is on your shopping list, don’t miss Mizzen+Main at The Summit, which opened in May. This Dallas-based chain creates stylish, practical dress shirts that are moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, and machine washable—perfect for the busy man. They also cater to various casual and workwear needs, making it a one-stop-shop for men’s fashion.

Dear Emmaline – Vestavia Hills

For parents in search of quality children’s clothing, Dear Emmaline in Vestavia Hills has just moved to a new location off Highway 31. Since 2021, this boutique has provided high-quality clothing for infants through big kids and features brands like Feltman Brothers and Little English. In addition to clothing, they sell charming gifts and keepsakes just in time for the holiday season.

Style of the South – Chelsea

In Chelsea, the Style of the South boutique is a treasure trove of unique home decor and gifts. Opened by Beth Holsonback in February, this shop includes specialty items such as seasonal and timeless treasures you won’t see elsewhere. With a background in event planning, Holsonback is ready to assist customers in finding that special, one-of-a-kind gift.

16th Cross Pearson Wearable Art Gallery – Downtown

Also downtown, 16th Cross Pearson Wearable Art Gallery opened its doors in July, focusing on the intersection of art and fashion. This gallery showcases local creative talent and offers style consulting, making it an inviting space for art lovers. “We invite everyone to explore our collections and participate in our vibrant events!” says Founder Tanya Pugh-Johnson.

Magic City Mercantile – Avondale

Last but not least, Magic City Mercantile has moved to a new location in Avondale this summer. This shop specializes in unique vintage streetwear and local sellers’ custom upcycled looks. Shop owners pride themselves on offering a selective collection, ensuring quality finds for customers looking for that perfect vintage piece.

With so many exciting retail options popping up, it’s the perfect time for Birmingham residents to get out, explore, and support these new local businesses!
