In a major step reflecting the resurgence and potential of downtown Birmingham, one local couple and their dermatology practice, Total Dermatology, made the move into the heart of the city – a move they consider one of their best decisions ever. The historic Woodward Building at the corner of 1st Ave North and 20th Street, known as the “heaviest corner on earth,” became their new address, marking a significant milestone as the first medical practice to move downtown in over 50 years.
A Change of Scenery
Previously situated in Birmingham’s Southside near Vulcan, their decision to move the practice emerged from a with a clear vision to stay within Birmingham city limits. After exploring several potential locations, the couple settled on the Woodward Building. Transitioning from their longtime Forest Park home, they also found a new residential haven in the historic New Ideal Building, beautifying their life tale with a sprinkle of nostalgia. The building was once a vibrant women’s department store, and their loft was the same place where a workman’s wife had once bought her wedding dress, adding a personal touch to their new abode. Their practice completed its transition to the new location on January 22, 2024, exactly 123 years after construction began on the Woodward Building.

New businesses are opening, old buildings are being revitalized, and people are once again seeing downtown Birmingham as a viable place to live and work. With easy access to all the city has to offer, everything one might need is within walking distance.
