Birmingham, Ala. – The city is reeling after a tragic mass shooting that occurred late Saturday night in the Five Points South area. Just after 11 p.m., Birmingham Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found two men and one woman lying unresponsive on the sidewalk.
Sadly, all three were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to UAB Hospital but succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. In total, eight individuals were taken to various hospitals around the city due to the incident, with Birmingham Fire and Rescue reporting that four of them are suffering from life-threatening injuries.
According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department, the initial investigation suggests that multiple shooters opened fire on a group gathered on the sidewalk or possibly in the street. Authorities are still working to determine whether the gunfire was directed from a moving vehicle or from individuals on foot.
In the wake of this violence, community leaders are expressing their concern. Mayor Randall Woodfin highlighted that “these mass shootings have more to do with culture than they do criminality.” Officer Fitzgerald confirmed the mayor’s sentiments, stating that “we’re seeing far too many arguments being settled by bullets.” His remarks indicate a broader concern regarding the underlying issues that contribute to such a violent episode.
As of now, police have not made any arrests related to this incident, and they are urging anyone who may have information to step forward. If you saw anything or have any details that could assist investigators, you are encouraged to call 911 or reach out to the Birmingham Police Department at 205-254-1764. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
This tragic event has shaken the local community, known for its vibrant atmosphere and close-knit neighborhoods. Local residents have expressed their grief and concern about the increasing incidents of gun violence in the area. Many are calling for renewed efforts to promote safety and unity within the community.
As the investigation continues, support and solidarity from community members are more important than ever.
