Birmingham, a city known for its vibrant nightlife, faced a devastating incident this past Saturday night that left the community in shock. A mass shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. outside the popular Hush lounge in the Five Points South area, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to seventeen others.
Authorities have confirmed the identities of three of the four victims. They are Anitra Holloman, 21; Tahj Booker, 27; and Carlos McCain, 27. The fourth victim has yet to be formally identified, as confirmed by Officer Truman Fitzgerald. The three victims were found unresponsive on the sidewalk and were pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene.
Following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire, Birmingham police quickly responded and began working in coordination with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. A total of 15 fire units and at least 50 personnel were dispatched to handle the mass casualty situation as chaos unfolded around them. The area was immediately cordoned off, while hundreds of onlookers gathered, some in tears, searching for loved ones amidst the turmoil.
Witnesses stated that many of the victims were standing in line outside the Hush lounge when the shooting began. The chaotic scene saw emergency responders treating victims at several local hospitals, including UAB Hospital, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Brookwood Medical Center, and St. Vincent’s. The unidentified fourth victim later died at the hospital as well. The surviving 17 victims suffered a range of injuries, from non-life-threatening to critical.
Police reported that the shooters are believed to have used machine gun conversion devices, and more than 100 shell casings were collected at the scene, highlighting the intensity of the gunfire. Chief Scott Thurmond indicated that the investigation revealed one individual might have been specifically targeted in what appears to be a murder-for-hire incident, with others merely collateral damage caught in the crossfire.
This incident marks one of three large mass shooting events in Birmingham for the year, contributing to a total of 122 homicides reported across the city in 2024 alone. In light of the recent violence, local leaders, including Mayor Woodfin, have expressed deep concern over the escalation of gun violence, calling it part of an “American crisis.” He urged for decisive action from Alabama leaders to address this growing issue.
The Birmingham community is coming together in the aftermath of this tragic event, holding vigils and discussions about safety measures. Many residents share a collective hope that increased awareness and action can prevent further tragedies in the future.
No arrests have been made as of Sunday evening, and investigators are actively seeking leads. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact local detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
The number of lives affected by this horrific event serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for change in the community. As the city looks to heal, citizens are encouraged to support one another and remain vigilant in the pursuit of peace and safety.
