Hey there, Birmingham friends! We have some news that will definitely shake things up in our lovely Magic City. The much-anticipated Mardi Gras in the Magic City event, originally set for January 24, 2025, has been postponed. But don’t fret because the festivities will still be happening—just a bit later than planned! The new date is now set for March 2, 2025, and it promises to be an exciting day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m..
The postponement is a bummer, but the silver lining is that Birmingham will be buzzing with a variety of fun events from January 24 through January 26. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly outing, a cultural experience, or a chance to mingle with fellow locals, we’ve got your back! There’s plenty on the agenda to keep everyone entertained.
Don’t forget that you can also promote your own events for free by adding them to the local calendar! This is a great way to share what’s going on in our community and keep everyone connected.
And speaking of events, did you know that Birmingham will be hosting the World Games from July 7 to 17 in 2022? That’s right! It’s going to be an absolute spectacle with over 3,500 athletes competing across 34 sports and more than 223 medal events. Can you even imagine the level of athletic talent we’ll see right here in our city?
Among the exciting competitions, we’ll witness the likes of Olympic gold medalist Bart Swings in the inline speed skating events. Plus, you can watch multiple Olympic champions, including Sandra Sanchez and Ryo Kiyuna, battle it out in karate. And for those who love innovation, keep an eye out for new sports making their debut at the games—such as men’s lacrosse and breaking (dance sport). It’s truly going to be a memorable experience!
Looking further ahead, Birmingham will also host the SEC Women’s Gymnastics Tournament—a thrilling event that will be making its return for the second time in four years! And if basketball is your game, don’t miss the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament regionals happening at Legacy Arena in March 2025. Prepare for a whirlwind of excitement as we cheer for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds!
Fans of first responders will also be excited about the 2025 World Police and Fire Games coming to Birmingham starting June 27, showcasing competitors from around the globe. We’re lucky to have so much activity and talent coming to our city!
In case you’re looking for something uplifting this January, don’t forget that the MCCC is hosting free events from January 20-24 to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. You can participate in engaging presentations discussing the impact MLK had on Michigan, as well as a discussion centered around the famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
The highlight will be the annual Unity Peace March, taking place on January 24 at noon. It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate our shared values!
