Legacy of Hope Plans Abundant Events for Donate Life Month to Increase Organ Donation Awareness

Eyeing a Greater Initiative Towards Saving Lives

The organ procurement organization in Alabama, Legacy of Hope, is taking charge of numerous events and promotions to commemorate National Donate Life Month (NDLM). The series of events is organized each year in April. The main purpose of these events is to stimulate public awareness about the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donations. The initiative originated from Donate Life America, aiming to share the experiences of individuals transformed by organ donation and transplantation.

Despite approximately half of the U.S. population being registered donors, the demand for organs and tissues far surpasses the supply. Every year, a staggering 6,000 people lose their life waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. On an equally distressing note, every eight minutes another person is added to that waiting list. To address this critical situation, more citizens are encouraged to contribute to the gift of life.

The Series of Events to Ignite Hope

The schedule for NDLM consists of various events including the UAB Donate Life softball game, National Blue & Green Day, Celebration of Life picnic, and Donor Dash for Life 5K run.

UAB Donate Life softball game will take place on Saturday, April 6 where UAB will take on North Texas. The first pitch will be thrown by double lung transplant recipient Kevin Huckaby.

Blue & Green Day, happening on Friday, April 12, is a significant event that works to uphold the Donate Life brand through its official colors. Various promotions are planned by Legacy of Hope on Blue & Green Day, encouraging the public to register as organ donors.

Celebration of Life picnic invite all transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, and supporters to join the outdoor event featuring food, fun, and recognitions on Saturday, April 20.

Donor Dash for Life 5K run, the annual flagship event presented by Donate Life Alabama, will take place on Saturday, May 4. All proceeds from the run are directed towards donation awareness programs across Alabama.

Empowering Organ and Tissue Donation Through Recognitions

The Transplant Games of America, a multisport event highlighting success stories of donation and transplantation is coming to Birmingham in July. The games organized every two years celebrate the legacy of donors, highlight the need for donation, and rejoice over the success of transplantation. More than 10,000 participants, encompassing organ recipients, living donors, and donor families, will be participating in the games running between July 5-10.

Perks and Contributions to Further Donation Awareness

Donate Life Alabama license plates can be acquired through the Alabama Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division. The cost of the plate is $50, with $41.25 allocated to support public education about the significance of organ, eye, and tissue donation.

As this month of hope begins, learn more about the Legacy of Hope, register as an organ donor and discover how you can participate in National Donate Life Month events.
