Birmingham, Ala. – In a bid to aid children in their academic pursuits and lessen the burden on parents, the well-known ‘Kids Can Too’ Back to School drive has been extended through the weekend from August 2-4. In partnership with the local Birmingham Police Department and other charitable bodies, unused school supplies will be collected in support of local kids who might otherwise go without on their first day of school.
Community Engagement Officer with the Birmingham Police Department, LaVanna Williams, emphasized the importance of these generous donations to a child’s school year. “Some kids may not have what they need for the first day of school,” Williams explained. “So we collect to help them start off a better school year.”
Further reiterating the broader societal impact this effort can have, Williams continued, “You have better students, you have lower crime rates”. Simultaneously, it underscores the community’s commitment to supporting the budding potential in every child.
Many community members have already started bringing in their donations at the collection point at Regions Field. Among these evaluable contributors was Glenda Williamson. “I just hope what little bit I brought can help them“, said Williamson. She empathized with the stress children often face at the start of the academic year. “Do I have a pen, do I have a pencil? Well, we just brought pens and pencils, she added confidently.”
Notably, due to severe weather conditions on Friday, organizers have decided to extend the drive through the weekend, allowing more individuals to partake in this generous cause. Donations can be brought directly to Regions Field over the extended period.
As a special token of thanks, each donor would receive a Chick-fil-A card! A small yet heartfelt gesture to acknowledge their contributions in making a child’s school year that much easier.
As members of the Birmingham community and beyond, let’s ensure every child heads into the new school year with the tools they need to succeed. The ‘Kids Can Too’ School Supply Drive signifies more than just providing school supplies; it’s about instilling hope, fostering community spirit, and making a tangible difference in a child’s educational journey. So, let’s band together over this extended weekend of the drive to amplify this wonderful chain of giving!
