Celebrating a Pioneer: Judge Carole Smitherman Honored for Legal Legacy

In the heart of Birmingham, a special ceremony took place to honor a true trailblazer in the legal world, Judge Carole Smitherman. Recently presented with a remarkable proclamation from Jefferson County, the ceremony celebrated her extraordinary dedication and decades of service to the community. Emotions ran high as Judge Smitherman received a plaque that commemorates her incredible 50-year career in the Birmingham metro area, marking a significant chapter in the city’s history.

A Groundbreaking Journey

Judge Smitherman’s journey in law began adjusting papers in the Jefferson County Courthouse as a legal clerk back in 1976. Little did anyone know that just a few years later, in 1979, she would make waves by becoming the first Black woman hired as a deputy district attorney in Jefferson County. That was only the beginning of her impressive accomplishments. Fast forward to 1991, when she was appointed the first Black woman to serve on the Tenth Judicial Circuit Court Criminal Division, a feat that changed the landscape of legal representation in Alabama forever.

Breaking Barriers

As the first Black woman to hold the positions of municipal and circuit court judge in Birmingham, not to mention also being the first female and first African American President of the Birmingham City Council, Judge Smitherman’s influence extended beyond the courtroom. She even made history again as Birmingham’s first female mayor! Her leadership and commitment to community service inspired countless others, and during her recognition event, many community leaders highlighted her significant role in paving the way for future generations of Black female leaders.

A Community Celebration

The ceremony was graced by nearly a dozen notable leaders from across the state, including the Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice and the Jefferson County District Attorney. City officials and judges gathered to pay tribute to this remarkable woman who dedicated her life to serving her community and breaking through obstacles. Family members, including her husband Rodger Smitherman, an Alabama state senator, and her daughter Crystal—a Birmingham City Councilor—were also present, adding to the emotional atmosphere as they reflected on her achievements.

More Than Just a Jurist

Retiring last month after years of impactful service, Judge Smitherman emphasized that she had never sought out recognition but was driven by a love for the people. Community members shared heartfelt stories about her dedication and the trust they felt under her leadership during her time on the bench.

What’s Next for Judge Smitherman?

Although she has stepped down from the bench, Judge Smitherman is far from finished making her mark. With plans to continue legal practices at her family’s law firm, she may even take on cases as a judge occasionally. Additionally, she’s venturing into writing and sees herself penning a book in the near future. An interesting dream of hers is to open a cozy pancake house on the Gulf Coast, adding yet another layer to her diverse aspirations.

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout her long and distinguished career, Judge Smitherman taught Constitutional Law at Miles Law School for nearly 30 years, nurturing the minds of young lawyers. She served in various capacities, including a stint on the Birmingham City Council from 2001 to 2013, leaving a legacy that will not be forgotten. As she reflects on her time, it’s clear she remains committed to opening doors for others, fostering opportunities, and inspiring leaders in her community.

As we celebrate the remarkable Judge Carole Smitherman, her legacy serves as a shining example that hard work, passion, and dedication can indeed break all barriers. The future is bright for all those who continue to be inspired by her phenomenal journey.
