Birmingham’s vibrant culinary scene celebrates as José Medina Camacho, co-owner of Adiõs, is recognized as a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation Award in the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category. The culinary scene in Birmingham is buzzing with excitement today as José Medina Camacho, co-owner and beverage director at the lively establishment Adiõs, has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award! This exciting announcement has put a spotlight on not just Camacho but also the vibrant drink culture that Adiõs is quickly becoming known for since its opening in November 2023.
Camacho is recognized in the NEW Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category, which is no small feat. The James Beard Awards, established back in 1990, aim to celebrate the crème de la crème of culinary professionals across the board. These awards honor excellence and achievements in various categories related to food and drink, making them a significant milestone in every chef or beverage director’s career. With Camacho and Adiõs among just 20 semifinalists from across the United States, it’s clear that his hard work and creativity haven’t gone unnoticed.
What makes this award particularly special is its focus on high standards, creativity, and contributions to sustainability within the beverage service industry. Since opening its doors, Adiõs has garnered national attention for its festive and innovative drinks, even earning recognition from Forbes Magazine. It has also been named one of the 15 Best Tequila Bars in the U.S. by Food & Wine, which speaks volumes about Camacho’s talent and artistic vision in mixology.
Moreover, Adiõs has been recognized by the Spirited Awards as one of the best cocktail bars in America. This is a remarkable achievement for an establishment that has only recently entered the competitive beverage scene! Camacho, along with his talented business partners Jesús Méndez and Vinh Tran, has created a hot spot where patrons can indulge in innovative cocktails and a celebratory atmosphere.
Camacho isn’t alone in this celebration; two other Alabama chefs have also gained recognition as semifinalists. David Bancroft of Acre in Auburn is a contender for the Best Chef in the South category, while Arwen Rice from Red or White in Mobile joins him. Bancroft is a seasoned competitor, having previously won Food Network’s Iron Chef Showdown and being a semifinalist for several years. Rice is also in the running for the second consecutive year, showcasing her continued excellence in the culinary arts.
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Birmingham native Kyle Knall is a semifinalist for the Best Chef: Midwest category! Furthermore, notable culinary figures from Mississippi, Austin and Tresse Sumrall, are vying for the Best Chef: South title—making this year a truly competitive race.
Looking ahead, the finalists for various categories will be announced on April 2, and the grand winners of the James Beard Awards will be revealed at a lavish ceremony in Chicago on June 16.
