Homewood Celebrates Award-Winning Renovation of Birchfield Penuel Architects

Homewood Welcomes Award-Winning Renovation of Birchfield Penuel Architects

Tucked away on a peaceful street in Homewood, the modest rectangular building that houses Birchfield Penuel Architects (BPA) has recently undergone an impressive transformation. In July 2024, the firm not only celebrated this renovation but also received both the Honor Award and the People’s Choice Award at the AIA Birmingham Awards—a testament to their innovative work and community engagement.

A Legacy Built Over Decades

Founded in 1987 by architects Clay Birchfield and Chuck Penuel, BPA originally focused solely on healthcare architecture. With degrees from Auburn University and considerable experience in designing intricate clinical projects, the founders laid the groundwork for what would become a flourishing architectural firm. Now, as the founders step into retirement, a new generation aims to carry on their legacy while exploring fields beyond healthcare, including education, commercial, and civic projects.

Staying Local

The decision to renovate the Homewood office had been considered for over a decade. However, multiple factors influenced the firm’s choices. The location was central to essential clients such as UAB and St. Vincent’s, and it was also convenient for employees who lived in the area. Plus, the proximity to local eateries and coffee shops added to the appeal of keeping their office in the neighborhood.

As they embarked on the renovation, BPA leadership focused on five key factors to optimize the workspace for both employees and clients. Their aim was to create an environment that reflected their expertise and encouraged creativity and collaboration.

A Bright Future Ahead

Alicia Pughsley and Alan Crotwell, who have a combined 40 years of experience at BPA, are leading the team forward from their newly renovated space. Alicia, who has been with the firm for 16 years, has a background that includes work at the Auburn Urban Studio. She expressed her admiration for the firm’s culture, focusing on integrity, relationships, and support for employee growth, especially for women and parents. “I can both be a principal and an architect, while also being a mom and present with my kids,” she shared.

Alan, who joined the firm in 1999 shortly after graduating from Mississippi State University, echoed the sentiments about the company’s culture being a significant draw. He has a diverse background in commercial, higher education, and historic preservation architecture, along with significant healthcare experience since obtaining his license in 2007. Alan enjoys the problem-solving aspects of their work, which he says keeps the firm engaged and innovative.

A Commitment to Quality

Both Alicia and Alan emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with clients, a key reason many return to BPA for their architectural needs. As they navigate this transitional period, they express excitement about deepening partnerships with existing clients and inviting new ones to experience the firm’s reimagined work environment.

A Bright Community Focus

The renovation symbolizes more than just a new look—it reflects BPA’s commitment to the Homewood community and its desire to foster growth and innovation in the architectural field. They are ready to tackle new projects and challenges while maintaining the high standards that have made them a trusted name in the industry.

With a focus on high-quality work and a culture that values its employees, Birchfield Penuel Architects is poised for a successful future, continuing its positive impact in Homewood and beyond.
