Birmingham, AL – A tragic incident unfolded in Birmingham on September 2, leading to the death of one man and injuries to three others during what police are calling a home invasion. The event occurred at the University Crossings apartments located in the 200 block of Third Avenue S.W. Just before 11 p.m., officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress, but as they arrived, they learned that gunfire had erupted.
According to reports from the Birmingham Police Department, a group of individuals was playing cards inside a second-story apartment when the situation escalated dramatically. Officers found 21-year-old Tyler Reed Sanders, the alleged assailant, shot outside the apartment complex. He was rushed to UAB Hospital with serious injuries, but the unfolding scene painted a chilling picture of what had transpired inside.
Inside the apartment, officers discovered 49-year-old Lafontae Dejarris Lenard, who had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. Two additional victims—a man and a woman—fled the apartment after being shot, seeking safety nearby. Fortunately, emergency responders located them and transported them to UAB for treatment of their injuries. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Following the incident, Sanders was charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail after being released from the hospital. During a hearing before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Stephen Wallace, the judge stated there was clear evidence to deny Sanders any conditions for release, emphasizing community safety. As a result, he will remain in custody without bond.
Details from the preliminary investigation indicate that Sanders kicked in the front door of the apartment before firing shots. A response from someone inside the apartment led to Sanders being shot during the confrontation. The gunfire not only disrupted the apartment but also caused damage to neighboring units.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the Birmingham community, as residents grapple with the implications of such violence. There have been numerous calls for increased safety measures in residential areas, particularly in apartment complexes where many may feel vulnerable.
Birmingham police are continuing their investigations, and they have asked anyone with information related to the event to come forward. In light of this incident, city officials are likely to discuss measures aimed at preventing future occurrences of such violence in the area.
The community’s focus now shifts to supporting those affected directly by the violence and promoting discussions around safety. As this story develops, more information will be available, and our communities must come together to address these alarming trends.
The Birmingham Police Department encourages residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help ensure the safety of their neighborhoods.
