Birmingham, AL – The Bush Hills neighborhood has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places, marking the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of efforts by the Bush Hills Neighborhood Association. This accomplishment not only recognizes the architectural styles and historical significance of the area but also strengthens the cultural heritage of this charming community.
The journey to this prestigious designation began in 2015 when the neighborhood association decided to pursue being listed in the national register. With help from the city’s Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits (PEP), they obtained funding from the Alabama Historical Commission via a certified local government grant. This funding played a crucial role in conducting an architectural survey, which ultimately contributed to the nomination process.
Established in the 1920s, Bush Hills is known for its beautiful, historic homes and winding boulevards. The neighborhood is located near the outskirts of Birmingham’s city center and features a unique blend of architectural styles that reflect its rich history. The district is roughly enclosed by Princeton Parkway, 3rd Avenue West, Bush Boulevard, I-20/59, 8th Court West, and 8th Avenue West.
The National Register of Historic Places serves as the official list of the nation’s historic places that are worthy of preservation. Established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, this program is instrumental in coordinating and supporting public and private efforts aimed at identifying, evaluating, and protecting America’s historic and archaeological resources.
For the residents of Bush Hills, this designation represents a significant achievement. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of those within the neighborhood association who have tirelessly advocated for the recognition of their community’s history. This historic designation adds value not only to the homes in the area but also enhances the overall sense of pride among residents.
As part of continuing the preservation efforts, PEP will be hosting a historic preservation workshop on Tuesday, September 24, during the neighborhood association’s monthly meeting. This workshop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will take place at 1030 4th Terrace West. The meeting serves as an opportunity for residents to learn more about the implications of the new designation and discuss steps for future preservation efforts.
This designation not only acknowledges the architectural beauty of Bush Hills but also provides a framework for residents and city officials to foster an environment that respects and maintains the area’s historical integrity. Residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting to familiarize themselves with the historical preservation processes and consider how they can contribute to the ongoing preservation of their neighborhood.
Bush Hills has long been recognized as a vibrant community with a blend of old-world charm and modern living. With its newly earned status on the National Register of Historic Places, residents hope to attract more interest in the area, not just from prospective homeowners but also from visitors who want to experience its unique character.
The designation of Bush Hills as a historic district is a win for the community, placing its history and culture in the spotlight. This achievement has laid the groundwork for future generations to appreciate and maintain the unique heritage the neighborhood has to offer.
