Historic Designation for Bush Hills Neighborhood
Birmingham, AL – The Bush Hills neighborhood has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places, marking the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of efforts by the Bush Hills Neighborhood Association. This accomplishment not only recognizes the architectural styles and historical significance of the area but also strengthens the cultural heritage of this charming community.
Long Road to Recognition
The journey to this prestigious designation began in 2015 when the neighborhood association decided to pursue being listed in the national register. With help from the city’s Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits (PEP), they obtained funding from the Alabama Historical Commission via a certified local government grant. This funding played a crucial role in conducting an architectural survey, which ultimately contributed to the nomination process.
Established in the 1920s, Bush Hills is known for its beautiful, historic homes and winding boulevards. The neighborhood is located near the outskirts of Birmingham’s city center and features a unique blend of architectural styles that reflect its rich history. The district is roughly enclosed by Princeton Parkway, 3rd Avenue West, Bush Boulevard, I-20/59, 8th Court West, and 8th Avenue West.
A Step Towards Preservation
The National Register of Historic Places serves as the official list of the nation’s historic places that are worthy of preservation. Established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, this program is instrumental in coordinating and supporting public and private efforts aimed at identifying, evaluating, and protecting America’s historic and archaeological resources.
