In a dramatic event that brought morning commutes to a standstill, local law enforcement had their hands full dealing with a dangerous high-speed car chase through Greater Birmingham.
The incident began when an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Highway Patrol Trooper tried to pull over a 2022 Volvo XC60 for exceeding the speed limit on I-20 between Moody and Pell City, at approximately 6:56 a.m.
The driver of the Volvo, however, did not comply with the trooper’s orders, instigating a challenging and high-risk car chase that stretched on I-20 into Jefferson County and onto I-65 in Shelby County.
The heated pursuit traversed several areas, including St. Clair, Jefferson, and Shelby counties. This high-speed chase may have caused difficulties for morning commuters on these heavily travelled highways but was concluded without any major damage or reported injuries.
Despite the driver’s attempts to elude law enforcement authorities, the chase came to an end with the arrest of two Alabama residents. The Volvo driver, identified as 38-year-old Chesnie M. Redmond from Fountain Inn, was arrested and hit with charges of felony attempting to elude, reckless endangerment, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition to these charges, Redmond incurred multiple traffic violations.
The passenger, 26-year-old Denzel M. Talton from Greer, also attempted to evade arrest by fleeing on foot following the conclusion of the chase but was quickly apprehended. Talton faces charges of attempting to elude and possession of marijuana.
The success of the arrests is being attributed to the coordinated and diligent efforts between ALEA and the Alabaster Police Department. Following the arrests, ALEA Senior Trooper Vu Quang commended the collaboration between the two policing organizations.
While the immediate threat has been addressed with the arrests of Redmond and Talton, the case remains an active investigation. ALEA is currently probing deeper into the events leading up to the chase and the potential reasons behind the suspects’ desperate attempts to evade law enforcement personnel. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
