Helena Takes the Lead in Healthier Living with New Designation

In a big win for community health, Helena, a charming city in Alabama, has been awarded the first-ever Healthy Alabama Community designation. The announcement came during the Alabama League of Municipalities’ 2024 Graduation and Awards Ceremonies held at Perdido Beach Resort. With exciting developments underway, Helena is paving the way for healthier living all around.

A Pilot Program Leading the Way

Helena stepped up as the pilot community for the Healthy Alabama Communities program, which kicked off in 2022. This initiative, formed in collaboration with notable partners like the Alabama Communities of Excellence and the Alabama Department of Public Health, aims to support cities in making impactful policy, system, and environmental changes to enhance the health of every resident. Mayor Brian Puckett played a crucial role by volunteering Helena for this initiative and, alongside a dedicated team, the city has greatly improved access to physical activity by connecting trails and sidewalks throughout the community.

Connecting Trails and Encouraging Activity

Among the impressive features of this health-focused endeavor is Helena’s commitment to expanding its existing trail system. Future plans include constructing new paved trails that will not only provide safe walking and biking routes but also lead to stunning natural spots like the renowned Cahaba lilies. Residents can look forward to a more active lifestyle with convenient access to places like Amphitheater Park, where kayaking enthusiasts can embark on adventures along the Cahaba River, and the new 104-acre sports and leisure complex.

Refreshing Changes Ahead

Part of the initiative includes a focus on staying hydrated! Helena plans to install water bottle filling stations at key locations throughout the city, including the new sports complex and City Hall. This thoughtful addition will give residents a friendly eco-friendly alternative to bottled water and encourage everyone to stay refreshed during their outdoor activities.

Food Security: A Community Focus

But that’s not all! Helena is also committed to addressing food security. By partnering with a local church, the city will be launching a food pantry that ensures all residents have access to nutritious food options. This vital resource aims to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need, reinforcing Helena’s dedication to the well-being of its community members.

A Holistic Approach to Health

The Healthy Alabama Communities program isn’t just about exercise and food access—it’s a comprehensive initiative that also focuses on the well-being of new mothers and promotes breastfeeding. This multifaceted approach ensures that every citizen has the support they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Encouraging Other Cities to Participate

Mayor Puckett, who proudly received the award along with his team, is enthusiastic about the program’s benefits. “The Healthy Alabama Communities program is a fantastic tool for prioritizing the health of our residents,” he stated. Puckett is encouraging other cities in Alabama to tap into this resource, claiming it can foster vibrant and healthier communities across the state.

Looking Ahead with a Clear Plan

Helena is set to use the Alabama Physical Activity and Nutrition Plan (ALPAN) as a guiding framework to navigate future health initiatives. With evidence-based strategies and a collaborative spirit, the city plans to focus on maintaining active environments that encourage healthy habits among residents.

Community Support for a Healthier Tomorrow

Community leaders and stakeholders will continue to play a critical role in shaping a healthier Helena. The work doesn’t stop here! With resources and opportunities for active, engaged lifestyles, Helena is on the path to fostering a community of happiness and health.
