Birmingham Welcomes New Exhibit: Hayward Oubre—Structural Integrity

Birmingham is gearing up for an exciting new exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) titled Hayward Oubre: Structural Integrity. The exhibit is set to open its doors on October 4 and will run through February 2, 2025. This remarkable showcase features the work of Hayward Oubre, an influential artist from New Orleans known primarily for his unique sculptures crafted from wire coat hangers.

An Innovative Artistic Journey

Oubre’s work is a blend of personal and political themes, drawing inspiration from his rich history and experiences. This exhibit is particularly special as it is the first to focus solely on Oubre’s artistic creations, showcasing 52 sculptures, paintings, and prints. Oubre stands as a significant figure in Black American art, and this exhibition aims to shed light on his legacy.

According to curators, “Oubre’s modernist practice incorporated accessible, new, and found materials to produce work steeped in its place and moment: funny and current, relevant and visually dynamic, as well as political and personal.” This gives visitors a glimpse into how Oubre’s work reflects not only the times he lived in, but also his unique perspectives and artistic philosophy.

A Path to Recognition

Born in 1906 in New Orleans, Oubre made history as the first student to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Dillard University, Louisiana’s oldest historically Black college. His artistic journey continued through postgraduate studies at Atlanta University and the University of Iowa. During his educational endeavors, he was also mentored by notable artists like Hale Woodruff and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet.

Mastery Over Materials

Although Oubre experimented with a myriad of artistic mediums throughout his career, he is most famously recognized for transforming wire coat hangers into nearly 40 modernist masterpieces. His innovative use of this everyday item showcases not just creativity, but also a deep connection to the art of recycling and recontextualization.

As noted by the museum, “This exhibition brings Oubre’s work to our local, regional, and national audiences, highlighting his important legacy, which has been carefully stewarded by his family, friends, students, and early collectors.” Retiring from formal education in 1981, Oubre influenced countless Black southern artists over the span of more than forty years in both teaching and creating art.

Community Impact and Support

The BMA is pleased to announce that the exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of several institutions, including the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the Henry Luce Foundation. The Exhibit aims to emphasize Oubre’s profound impact on art in Alabama and beyond, making strides in recognizing the contributions of Black artists.

What to Expect

Visitors can look forward to an array of visually striking pieces that invite reflection and conversation. The BMA describes Oubre’s works as “vivid and assertive canvases” accompanied by “intricate and colorful wire sculptures.” The dynamic nature of his art promises to captivate audiences and highlight the relevance of Oubre’s artistic contributions to contemporary discussions in art and culture.
