An exhilarating performance awaits the audience as Hadestown, the award-winning musical theater extravaganza, makes its way to Birmingham next month. This show and more are part of the 2023–2024 Broadway in Birmingham series set to enthrall audiences with a myriad of captivating performances.
Winning notable awards, including eight 2019 Tony Awards® for Best New Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album, Hadestown weaves a captivating narrative that resonates across generations. The North American tour features a talented cast including Amaya Braganza as Eurydice, Lana Gordon as Persephone, Will Mann as Hermes, Matthew Patrick Quinn as Hades, and J. Antonio Rodriguez as Orpheus, among others.
Hadestown’s journey began as Anaïs Mitchell’s small indie theater project that toured Vermont. Over time, it transformed into an acclaimed album, and with the innovative pairing with director Rachel Chavkin, it has evolved into a new musical that transcends traditional genre definitions. Combining modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz, Hadestown artfully reimagines an ancient tale, inviting audiences on an unforgettable journey to the underworld and back.
With performances scheduled from March 19–24, 2024, Hadestown promises a compelling experience at the BJCC Concert Hall. Tickets are available for purchase at BroadwayInBirmingham.com, BJCC.org, and Ticketmaster.com. For groups of 10 or more, special savings are available by contacting Groups@ATGuild.org.
Hadestown is the brainchild of acclaimed singer-songwriter and Tony Award® winner Anaïs Mitchell and directed by the award-winning innovative director Rachel Chavkin. It marks a milestone in Broadway history, being the first time in over a decade that a woman has been the solo author of a musical, writing the music, lyrics, and book – a feat only accomplished four times in Broadway history. This magnificent creation etches an indelible mark on the history and future of musical theater.
Mitchell’s enchanting storytelling and Chavkin’s poetic direction brew an exquisite story of two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone. The tale pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love, culminating in a powerfully resonant and, against all odds, a defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Offbeat yet charming, Hadestown invites you to be a part of an experience where love strives to overcome the trials of life with audacious optimism and joy.
Hadestown is more than just a show; it’s a riveting journey filled with love, hope, and rebirth. This musical offers a layered exploration of the human condition, demanding a perspective shift in its audience, all supported by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers. Incorporated with the vibrant rhythm of Mitchell’s melodies and Chavkin’s keen eye for vivid storytelling, Hadestown is poised to cast a mesmerizing spell over Birmingham next month.
