Birmingham Community Unites in Response to Five Points South Mass Shooting Arrests and Reward for Information

Birmingham Community Reacts to Arrests in Five Points South Shooting

Birmingham, AL – The recent mass shooting in the Five Points South entertainment district continues to cast a long shadow over the community. As investigators work tirelessly on the case, a significant reward remains available for information leading to further arrests. The offer, set at a staggering $100,000, is the largest in Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama’s history.

Reward Details and Investigation Progress

Despite the recent arrest of Damien Laron McDaniel III, 22, who faces multiple charges including capital murder, the Birmingham Police Department and Crime Stoppers are still encouraging individuals with information to come forward. The reward, jointly offered by Crime Stoppers and the FBI, aims to motivate tipsters to provide crucial information to detectives. It has been noted that no one has yet been designated to receive any part of this reward.

According to Crime Stoppers Executive Director Bob Copus, over 120 tips have been submitted regarding the shooting that occurred on September 21, which claimed the lives of four individuals and injured 17 others. Chief of Birmingham Police, Scott Thurmond, reported that the community showed remarkable engagement, resulting in more than 300 tips submitted through various channels, including a specially created QR code for this case.

Details of the Incident

The mass shooting, which unfolded outside of the Hush lounge, involved gunmen firing more than 100 rounds, reportedly intending to hit one of the individuals in the crowd. Among those killed were Carlos McCain, 27; Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26; Anitra Holloman, 21; and Tahj Booker, 27. Authorities believe the gunfire may have been a premeditated “hit.” Investigators continue to explore connections between the victims and potential motives behind the shooting, acknowledging some victims had extensive criminal histories.

The Role of Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers’ longstanding practice of maintaining anonymity for tipsters has been a cornerstone for promoting community involvement. When someone submits a tip, they receive a unique identification number, ensuring the anonymity of the individual providing information. This method has been successful in previous cases, such as the high-profile investigation into the abduction of Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney.

“It’s a life-changing reward,” said Frank Barefield, Chairman of Crime Stoppers’ board, regarding the current situation. He emphasized that no identifying information is disclosed, allowing people to share information without fear.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation continues, the police department is still accepting tips. Although some progress has been made with McDaniel’s arrest, authorities are considering additional charges as they gather more evidence. The multi-agency task force includes the FBI, ATF, DEA, and several local law enforcement agencies, all working collaboratively to ensure justice is served.

Chief Thurmond reaffirmed the significant impact of the tragic incident, not only on the families of the victims but on the entire Birmingham community. “We’ve got six people who lost their lives, not to mention 17 others who were injured in this massacre. The number of hours dedicated to this investigation is astronomical,” he said.

Call to Action

As the community mourns the loss and seeks answers, anyone with information regarding the Five Points South shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. The path to healing in Birmingham continues to rely on the joint efforts of law enforcement and an engaged community willing to stand against violence.
