Birmingham, AL – The East Lake neighborhood was rocked by gunfire on Friday, October 11, 2024, leading to the tragic death of a young man during a dispute that has left the community reeling. Authorities identified the victim as Paul Devaried Terry Jr., a 20-year-old resident of Birmingham. His life was cut short in an incident that occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 8300 block of Fourth Avenue North.

Incident Details

Officers from the East Precinct were called to the scene after reports of a person shot. Upon arrival, they discovered Terry inside a shed located behind an abandoned house, which is near East Lake Park. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced him dead at the scene at 12:40 p.m.

According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the victim was at the residence in the 8200 block of Fourth Avenue North to visit an acquaintance. During the visit, an argument escalated between Terry and another guest at the home. Witnesses reported that the argument turned heated, which ultimately led to gunfire. It remains unclear what the two men were arguing about.

The Aftermath

Authorities confirmed that at least several shots were fired during the confrontation, and shell casings were later found in the roadway. It was reported that Terry fled the scene but collapsed in the shed nearby. Bystanders, recognizing the gravity of the situation, promptly called 911 for assistance.

As the investigation continues, police have not announced any arrests related to this incident. Terry was one of two victims shot and killed in Birmingham on that fateful Friday. The other victim, Kerry Terrell Primm, aged 30, was fatally shot just outside his home in the 1800 block of 31st Street in the Ensley Highlands community.

This tragic incident marks the 130th homicide of the year in Birmingham. In comparison, the city had recorded 103 homicides by this time last year. Regionally, Jefferson County has seen a total of 164 homicides in 2024, including the 130 within Birmingham city limits. It should be noted that nine of the 2024 homicides have been classified as justifiable.
