In Vestavia Hills, Alabama, the air is buzzing with anticipation as Abbie Stockard, the reigning Miss Alabama 2024, prepares to represent her beloved state at the prestigious Miss America pageant. This event will take place in sunny Orlando, Florida, from December 30 to January 5, marking the start of a brand-new year and an unforgettable chapter in Abbie’s life.
At just 21 years old and a dedicated nursing anesthesia student at Auburn University, Abbie is thrilled about the opportunity to showcase her talents on a national stage. “If you had told little Abbie that she would one day be going to Miss America, she would have thought you were joking!” she exclaimed with a gleam in her eye. Growing up, she was enchanted by the pageant, watching with her mom from the comfort of their living room. Now, Abbie aims to inspire the next generation of young girls just like her.
Abbie’s pageant platform is particularly close to her heart: cystic fibrosis awareness. Her passion stems from a personal connection with her best friend Maddie, who has lived with this challenging condition since childhood. “Seeing firsthand the toll it takes on her mental and physical health has motivated me to raise awareness,” Abbie shared. She believes firmly that a cure is possible but requires nationwide support and engagement.
This year, Abbie’s hard work paid off as she organized an extraordinary fundraiser, raising an astonishing $190,000 for the Alabama chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—the largest in the chapter’s history! With Paul Finebaum as the emcee and the Hoover police chief taking the heat, it was a night filled with laughter, generosity, and, most importantly, impact.
As the pageant approaches, Abbie is diving headfirst into preparation. With five competition categories—including fitness, talent, and on-stage questions—she’s keeping herself busy. “I’m working out with a personal trainer and practicing routines that help me feel confident,” she said. The evening gown category may seem glamorous, but Abbie notes, “It’s more challenging than it looks, especially when nerves kick in!”
To sharpen her communication skills, she practices her interview techniques like it’s a job application. Abbie knows that being well-versed in current political and global issues is essential, especially when she faces judges who want to see her at her best.
Fashion is, of course, a high priority! Abbie has an incredible style team at The Clothes Tree by Deborah and Gus Mayer, helping her find the perfect outfits for competition. “Creating my gown was like a dream! I can’t wait for everyone to see it on stage,” she gushes.
The community is rallying behind Abbie, including fellow volunteers and leaders of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, who have been inspired by her unwavering dedication. “Abbie is truly fantastic,” said Margaret Smith, executive director of the Alabama chapter. “Her passion and determination will continue to change lives.”
With only days left until the pageant, Abbie remains focused and grounded. “Whenever I start feeling nervous, I take a moment for myself—sometimes with a little worship music,” she said. Abbie’s approach to balancing stress and excitement showcases her resilience. “I remind myself that this journey is in God’s hands.”
As she prepares for this life-changing experience, Abbie invites everyone to join her journey on Instagram @missamericaal. Whether she walks away with the crown or not, it’s clear that Abbie Stockard has already made a significant impact and will continue inspiring others wherever she goes. With the heart of a champion and a love for her community, Abbie truly embodies what it means to be Miss Alabama!
