Birmingham Celebrates Grand Opening of Edgehill at Southtown Development

On a warm morning in Birmingham, the city’s leaders and residents gathered to witness a momentous occasion—the grand opening of the Edgehill at Southtown development. This new facility stands as a beacon of hope and progress within the community, bringing together local leaders, future residents, and supporters to celebrate its completion.

Significance of the Development

The $17 million development features 60 units with 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments that come equipped with essential appliances. Thomas Clark, one of the future residents who has lived in the previous Southtown Court for three years, expressed his excitement. “I’m very excited. It’s an honor and a blessing to be a part of history,” Clark said, reflecting on the positive change this development brings for the community. “It’s amazing and fascinating. I thank God for putting a roof over my head.”

Community Leaders Unite

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Jaquice Reynolds, president of the Southtown Resident Council, shared heartfelt sentiments about the significance of the new residences. “This means a lot to us,” Reynolds stated to a crowd that included Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, City Council President Darrell O’Quinn, and other prominent officials. “We are very thankful and we’re very grateful that [the Housing Authority of Birmingham District] HABD chose us to go along this journey. We’d like to thank our developers for providing such a remarkable residence.”

Officials Share Vision and Hope

Mayor Woodfin highlighted the deep community impact of the development, saying, “Southtown represents hope … this is what putting people first looks like. We build new homes, we build new opportunities, and most importantly, we build hope.”

Dontrelle Young Foster, president and CEO of HABD, echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of the day. “Today marks a significant milestone in the journey of the Edgehill at Southtown, a journey that speaks to the power of vision, collaboration, and a shared commitment to create not just buildings but a future filled with opportunities,” Foster remarked.

A Look at the New Amenities

Edgehill at Southtown is located on the former grounds of Southtown Court, a public housing community established in 1941. The new development boasts an array of amenities designed to enhance residents’ quality of life, including:

  • Business centers with computers and flat-screen TVs.
  • A fitness center.
  • Community rooms.
  • A game room featuring a Pac-Man video arcade machine and pool table.
  • Charging stations for electric vehicles.
  • In-unit washer and dryers, and balconies.

The first residents are set to begin moving in on October 1, marking a new chapter for those who will call Edgehill home. Construction of the facility began in April 2023, with the collaboration of HABD, the City of Birmingham, Southside Development Company, and several contractors as part of a larger effort that aims to include affordable housing, retail, hospitality, and office space within the Southtown area.

Future Plans

Mayor Woodfin revealed ongoing plans for the neighborhood, stating, “We’re not done yet. Southtown Senior Living Facility and our second occupancy of 143 looks to be online next spring.” He shared sentiments welcoming back the displaced residents, stating, “To the residents of Southtown: Welcome home!”

This development signifies both a fresh start for the community and a commitment to providing accessible housing. The gathering of city officials, residents, and business leaders served as a reminder of the importance of collaboration in creating a brighter future for Birmingham.
