A man has been charged in response to a hit-and-run incident resulting in a tragic death in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. The victim, an 84-year-old gentleman, was struck by the vehicle while crossing a road in his wheelchair.
The Incident and Charges
The unfortunate accident occurred on Sunday, June 16, while the elderly man was on his way home from church. He was crossing the intersection of Messer Airport Highway at Georgia Road when the accident happened around 10:58 am.
The driver accused of the hit-and-run, identified as Sammus Hikeem Strickland, fled the scene immediately after the incident. He now faces the charge of leaving the scene of an accident that has resulted in death or injury. Mr. Strickland, aged 27, was booked into Jefferson County jail and has since been released after posting a bond of $15,000. His first court appearance is scheduled for the month of August.
The Victim
Identified as Erwin Ellis Curtis, was taken to UAB Hospital by ambulance, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. He suffered from bleeding on the brain and was kept in a medically-induced coma until his passing on July 5.
Erwin Curtis, a retired employee of Coca-Cola, was remembered fondly by family. His niece, Ilsa Curtis, eulogized her uncle as a “pillar of strength, love, and wisdom.”
“At 84 years old, Uncle Erwin was a pillar of strength, love, and wisdom for us all,’’ she said. “His presence filled our lives with joy, guidance, and cherished memories.”
Family’s Reaction
Ilsa, while expressing her anguish, said, “You don’t just throw someone like away,’’ referring to the hit-and-run incident. Even in their grief, Curtis’ family is leaning on their faith. “Though we grieve his loss deeply, we find solace in knowing that Uncle Erwin is now in the arms of the Lord,’’ Ilsa stated.
Call for Justice
The Curtis family, the Birmingham community, and the law enforcement authorities are resolved to see justice served in this tragic hit-and-run incident. They hope that this case may serve as a grim reminder of the potential lethal consequences of negligent driving and hit-and-run scenarios.
Meanwhile, Sammus Strickland will face the full extent of the law in his forthcoming trial. The repercussions he’ll face are yet unclear, but many hope that this case will bring a sense of justice and closure to Curtis’ family and set an example for other drivers.
Public Plea
While authorities pursue legal avenues, the grieving family urges public vigilance and empathy. They stress the importance of driver responsibility and respect for the safety of fellow road users. They implore everyone to see themselves in each road user and act with the safety, care, and compassion they would require.
