Driver Allegedly Under the Influence Indicted after Fatal Collision in Birmingham

Fatal Crash in Birmingham

In a tragic turn of events last year, Samone Lashundra Newell, a 25-year-old woman from Fairfield, lost her life when the car she was a passenger in crashed into a building. The car, driven by 27-year-old Zahriya Riana Miller, also from Fairfield, was allegedly careening eastbound off a curve on Warrior Road when it careened into the edifice.

Police indicate that the driver seemed to have lost control of the vehicle before it struck the building. The crash was so powerful that it penetrated a double brick wall, bringing the car all the way into the small business in the building at the 1625 mark of Warrior Road.

Immediate Aftermath of the Crash

Following the collision, Miller and Newell were immediately taken to the Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Newell, the passenger, was declared dead at 2:13 a.m., less than an hour after the accident at 1:25 a.m on October 29, 2021.

Indictment and Charges

The case took an interesting turn on May 17 when the Jefferson County grand jury indicted Zahriya Riana Miller on charges of reckless manslaughter. Documents made public on June 11, 2024, allege that Miller was under the influence of alcohol during the incident. Miller was initially apprehended in November 2023 concerning the October 2021 incident and is currently out of jail on a $30,000 bond.

Dangers of Driving Under the Influence

According to national and local safety councils, the incident is a grim reminder of the immediate and life-altering dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Every year, needless deaths and injuries occur due to decisions made by individuals to drive impaired. Efforts at both the community and national level are focusing on strict legislation, awareness campaigns, and educational initiatives to curb this menace and save lives.

This case reiterates the role that local communities, law enforcement, and justice departments play in holding accountable those who endanger their lives and others by driving under the influence. It simultaneously offers a poignant reminder of the serious repercussions of reckless driving and impaired decision-making behind the wheel.
