Birmingham Gears Up for a Music Night with a Message

In an effort to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness Month, and honor the influential soul singer and songwriter, Donny Hathaway, the mental health initiative, Brother Let’s Talk will be hosting a tribute concert in downtown Birmingham this coming Friday, May 24.

Two Shows, One Cause

The tribute concert will be held at the renowned Uptown Jazz Lounge, located at 2250-B 9th Ave N, Birmingham. Concert-goers will have the opportunity to catch two shows, one at 7:00 p.m. and the other at 9:30 p.m. This initiative not only pays homage to Hathaway, who grappled with mental illness throughout his life, but also aims to raise awareness about mental health issues within the community.

Creating Dialogue Around Mental Health

The concert, thus, becomes a platform that serves a dual purpose. It will stimulate dialogue about mental health, especially within communities of color, often disregarding mental health issues due to stigma and neglect. Consequently, it will also shed light on the feats and struggles of the late Donny Hathaway, whose music continues to inspire generations.

A Concert with a Heart

Brother Let’s Talk is a community initiative that seeks to promote mental health awareness and support for men of color. The organization has teamed up with Birmingham Cares to host this event, and together they hope to make significant strides in dispelling myths surrounding mental health, raising more awareness, and will hope to generate more understanding and acceptance within the community.

Being an event with a heart, entry to the concert is free, ensuring that it is inclusive and accessible to all. However, attendees can reserve their spots for the concert here.

Let the Music Speak

Through its unique approach, Brother Let’s Talk hopes to leverage the power of music to reach, teach, and touch people. They believe that music, like Hathaway’s, can provide solace, spark conversations, reduce stigma, and foster a more accepting environment. In light of the upcoming event, it’s likely that Birmingham residents will not only enjoy an evening of soulful tunes but also leave with heightened consciousness regarding the significance of mental health.
