In a shocking act of family violence, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, witnessed a horrifying shooting incident that resulted in two fatalities and two severe injuries.
A man believed to have executed the heinous crime is now under arrest. Police caught the suspect around 9.15 p.m in the Five Points West area, barely five hours after the alleged domestic rampage. While police have withheld his identity as of now, people close to the suspect suggest he may have “snapped”.
The wave of grief is palpable as family members and friends gather to mourn their losses. The horror began at 4:45 p.m. when officers attended to reports of multiple shootings at a residence on the 1600 block of Dennison Avenue. The first on-scene officers discovered a deceased woman, later identified by family members as LaQuitta Dunn, a much-beloved mother and grandmother. She had succumbed to a gunshot wound. Another male victim wounded in the same incident reached Princeton Baptist Medical Center with severe injuries. He is currently at UAB Hospital with critical injuries.
While piecing together the sequence of events, officers pursued indicators that the suspect had also fired shots at a different location, the 1400 block of 17th Place S.W. On arriving at the second location, they found two more victims, a man and a woman, in the basement den area. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene while the critically injured woman was rushed to UAB Hospital.
Police believe that the shooter has a blood or familial relationship with the male victims. Although the women might not be related by blood, they were familiar to the suspect. It is suspected that the shooter may have coerced someone into driving him from the first crime scene to the second. Describing these incidents as a domestic-related, non-random shooting rampage, “This is a shooter who knew every single person who he shot,” remarked Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
While multiple agencies and detectives have joined the investigative spree, the trigger for this horrifying rampage remains unknown. “That is what is so scary. No one knows,” said Officer Fitzgerald. This inexplicable act of violence marks the 96th and 97th homicides in the city, amongst which eight are deemed justifiable and aren’t classified as criminal. Officer Fitzgerald emphasized understanding, reassurance, and safety for the public, stating that the area is heavily saturated with law enforcement personnel, ensuring no leads escape attention.
