Suspect Charged with Capital Murder in Weekend Killing of 19-year-old Woman in Birmingham

Charges Filed in Mya Parker’s Fatal Shooting

Jeremiah Pressley, a 23-year-old man was charged with capital murder following the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Mya Parker in Birmingham. Parker was surprisingly killed inside her vehicle during an argument with Pressley, who she had briefly been dating. The reason why the charge is capital is because Parker was in her vehicle when she was suddenly shot dead.

Details Append Around the Incident

Pressley willingly turned himself in to police over the weekend and is currently held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail. The fatal incident occurred at 10th Street West and Graymont Avenue, during the early hours of Sunday when Birmingham’s West Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at around 4:30 a.m.

Parker and another young woman were in the car when the shooting took place. They were both rushed to the UAB Hospital, but Parker was pronounced dead at 5:02 a.m. The other woman present in the vehicle was injured but survived. A man who was in the vehicle was unharmed.

Grieving Words from Parker’s Mother

“I’ve always told people my children wouldn’t be a statistic,’’ said a grieving Marla Hinson-Parker, mother of the deceased. She remembers her daughter as a loved individual, full of energy and independence. Death of her daughter shocked the closely knit family and turned their world upside down.

Early Life of Mya Parker

Parker, a graduate of Minor High School, spent the majority of her high school years in Gardendale. She had held several jobs and had recently secured a new one at UAB’s environment services. Unfortunately, her orientation was due next Friday before the devastating incident took her promising life away.

Call for Justice

The deeply saddening incident brings forth the urgency of enforcing strict punishment for such brutal crimes to ensure the safety of young lives. The charges against Jeremiah Pressley will be dealt seriously by the legal authorities, and justice will be sought for Mya Parker’s tragic death. During these times, society is reminded of the dire need for peace and harmony within communities.
