In the heart of North Birmingham, a local entrepreneur is making waves with her dedication to providing personalized tax services. CaTonya Scott, a mother of six, is the proud owner of D5 Tax Services, LLC, which she established in March 2018. With over twelve years of professional experience under her belt, Scott felt a compelling need to help individuals and small businesses navigate their tax obligations.
“I saw a great need for the services,” said Scott, who is not just a tax preparer but identifies herself as a tax professional. She emphasizes the importance of education in her work, stating, “At the end of the day, you do want to make a profit, but I find joy in preparing taxes because I’m educating and giving clients understanding.” This commitment to her clients keeps her busy throughout the year, not just during tax season.
The name “D5” has a personal significance to Scott. It reflects her five children, all of whom have the letter ‘D’ in their names. “When asked how I came up with the name, I immediately smile and mention that I wanted to include them in my business,” Scott explained. Her commitment to family is evident, as she mentions, “They are my strength, they are my life. They are my why.”
Scott’s entrepreneurial spirit not only shines through her tax services but also extends to her other ventures. She owns a yoni store named Pamper My Yoni, which caters to both women and men’s health and wellness. Additionally, she works as an independent licensed life and health insurance agent. Amidst these responsibilities, Scott is also pursuing a law degree at the Birmingham School of Law.
“Two weeks into starting law school, I lost my mom. I started law school that same year,” Scott reflected, attributing her drive to her mother’s influence. “My mom was a hustler and grinder… I have always had this hustle mentality and wanting more.”
Scott’s educational journey has been anything but straightforward. Growing up, she attended schools in Birmingham and earned her GED in 2001 after becoming a young mother. Eventually, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from Miles College, graduating magna cum laude in 2021. However, her path was not without its challenges. “I started, stopped, and started again. I was determined not to give up,” she stated.
Her experiences led her to leave her corporate job at a high-demand call center to start her own business. What began as preparing her own taxes turned into a full-fledged service after a friend suggested she help others. Celebrating twelve years in business this March, Scott relishes the flexibility that being her own boss provides. “With my flexibility, I’m free to do whatever I please. I set my hours and pace,” she expressed.
Scott is also an active participant in the Reboot program through Rebirth Community Corporation. This initiative provides resources and technical assistance to support business owners in both their professional and personal lives. “The program has equipped us with strategies that will significantly contribute to the success of D5 Tax Services,” Scott noted.
Her involvement with Rebirth Community Corporation aligns with her vision for the future, which includes expanding her business and building a reliable team. “I plan to implement all I’ve learned to enhance our outreach, marketing, and financial management strategies,” she said. She is optimistic about how these developments can lead to not just financial success but personal fulfillment as well.
