Birmingham’s Bush Hills Neighborhood Receives Historic Designation

Birmingham, Alabama – In a significant milestone for the Bush Hills neighborhood, officials announced that the area has been officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. After nearly a decade of dedication and hard work from local residents, this recognition highlights the neighborhood’s unique character, which dates back to the 1920s.

Neighborhood Legacy

Bush Hills is notably recognized for its winding boulevard, historic homes, and the site of the former Birmingham Southern College campus. The designation comes on the heels of an initiative that was begun in 2015 when the Bush Hills Neighborhood Association decided to pursue recognition for the area. “We’re so glad to finally have the official designation,” said Walladean Streeter, president of the neighborhood association.

Efforts and Support

Securing the historic designation required collaboration between the neighborhood association and the city’s Department of Planning, Engineering, and Permits (PEP). Together, they were able to obtain funding from the Alabama Historical Commission for an architectural survey and to prepare a formal nomination. This joint effort proved essential in demonstrating the neighborhood’s historical significance.

Workshop for Community Engagement

To further inform residents about the significance of the National Register designation, PEP will participate in a historic preservation workshop scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, during the monthly neighborhood association meeting. The event will take place at 5:30 PM at 1030 4th Terrace West. “We look forward to sharing all the details with the neighbors in an upcoming workshop facilitated by the Birmingham City Historic Preservation Officer,” Streeter noted.

Defining the District

According to a news release from the city of Birmingham, the new historic district is defined as being roughly bounded by Princeton Parkway, 3rd Avenue West, Bush Boulevard, I-20/59, 8th Court West, and 8th Avenue West. This designation will not only honor the history of the neighborhood but also help in promoting its preservation for future generations.

Community Memories

As the community celebrates this achievement, residents are encouraged to reflect on their connections to the neighborhood. The association invites everyone to share their favorite memories of Bush Hills on social media by tagging @bhamnow. This is an opportunity for long-time residents and newcomers alike to engage with each other and celebrate their shared history.

Looking Ahead

The National Register of Historic Places serves as a crucial program aimed at coordinating efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect historical resources across the country. With Bush Hills now officially recognized, the neighborhood is poised to benefit from increased awareness and potential funding opportunities for preservation projects. The community’s dedication to this cause reflects the importance of heritage and the spirit of partnership that defines Bush Hills.

With ongoing efforts to celebrate and maintain the character of the neighborhood, residents can anticipate a future that honors the past while looking forward to new possibilities. For further updates on the neighborhood’s activities and the upcoming workshop, residents are encouraged to stay connected with the Bush Hills Neighborhood Association.
