Bruto Brings Italian-Inspired Café Vibes to Birmingham’s Avondale Neighborhood
“Bruto: Italian for Critter” blends European café culture with Southern charm
BIRMINGHAM, AL — March 25, 2025 — The team behind Birmingham’s beloved bar Mom’s Basement has officially opened the doors to Bruto, a new Italian-inspired café located in the heart of Avondale at 4420B 4th Ave S. With a focus on warm hospitality, exceptional coffee, and house-made baked goods, Bruto is already making itself at home in the local community.
Bruto—cheekily branded with the tagline “Italian for Critter”—was designed as a cozy neighborhood spot with Southern flair. “In the South, we call animals critters,” says co-owner and General Manager David McSween, a longtime fixture in Birmingham’s bar scene. “We liked the idea of blending that Southern spirit with a classic Italian café feel.”
The café features a mix of rustic textures and art-forward design, with walls painted in a calming green and filled with eclectic art curated by the owners. A striking 23-by-13-foot oriental rug anchors the space, topped with a large leather-topped community table that invites guests to gather, share, or work.
Bruto’s kitchen offers an array of baked-in-house breads and pastries, including sourdough, focaccia, baguettes, muffins, scones, and cookies. Its food menu highlights a variety of sandwiches and Sicilian-style pizza by the slice, including the standout Il Capitano—an delicious all day sandwich with fried egg, crispy prosciutto, Italian mayo, arugula, lemon, and parmesan on house-made sourdough.
In addition to its food, Bruto delivers a standout coffee program. Guests can enjoy expertly crafted espresso drinks, nitro cold brew on draft, and even nitro-infused chocolate milk—a hit with both kids and adults.
The café is now open to the public and located in the Avondale Mills shopping center, just steps away from its sister spot, Mom’s Basement. With its blend of European inspiration, Southern soul, and community-first design, Bruto is poised to become a new favorite hangout in Birmingham.
