Community Comes Together to Support Breast Cancer Patients

In Birmingham, the struggle and journey of breast cancer patients sparked an important conversation among caregivers and family members. A recent talk at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center highlighted how loved ones can effectively support those navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.

Understanding the Emotional Impact

Dr. Catherine Parker, a breast surgical oncologist at UAB, emphasized the emotional toll that a breast cancer diagnosis can take on a patient. “A breast cancer diagnosis is a shock, and that shock should not be minimized,” she stated. Dr. Parker highlighted that one of the most supportive roles friends and family can take is simply urging the patient to take the time needed to process the diagnosis and make informed treatment decisions.

“When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, the variety of advice and opinions can be overwhelming,” Dr. Parker noted. This is where caregivers play an essential role by assuring the patient that the ultimate choice regarding their treatment lies with them. “Helping your family member determine their goals can greatly influence the decisions they make,” she added.

Creating a Safe Space

After a diagnosis, it’s not uncommon for patients to experience a whirlwind of emotions, from anxiety about treatment to feelings of guilt for not perceiving their diagnosis as severe as others’, according to Dr. Parker. “It’s important for patients to feel validated in whatever emotions they are experiencing,” she said. Caregivers are encouraged to allow patients a safe space to share those feelings without having to offer immediate solutions.

Sharing thoughts and feelings can be facilitated by asking if the patient would like someone to accompany them to medical appointments. Dr. Parker also pointed out that if a patient prefers to attend appointments alone, this should be respected too. Writing down any questions they may have before the appointment can help ensure all concerns are addressed.

Support During Treatment

Transportation assistance is another key area where caregivers can lend their support. While some patients may want to drive themselves, others may appreciate having a trusted individual accompany them to treatments.

Patients often deal with numerous side effects during treatment, including fatigue, nausea, and hair loss. Dr. Parker advised caregivers to engage with oncologists to find ways to address these side effects effectively, which can include everything from medication to dietary recommendations.

Community Events and Resources

In a show of support for those battling breast cancer, the Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center is gearing up for its marquee fundraiser, Haute Pink, set to take place on Thursday, October 17. This event aims to inspire and empower breast cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones by featuring clients modeling custom outfits designed by local Birmingham fashion designers.

Caregivers should also remain mindful that patients may have altered tastes or preferences for food during treatment. Offering opportunities to try different healthy foods, without pressure to eat, can be beneficial. Continuing to provide emotional support throughout treatment is essential, allowing patients to communicate their feelings without fear of being judged.

Available Resources

Birmingham residents facing breast cancer will find several invaluable resources through the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. One notable initiative is the Angel Squad, a group of breast cancer survivors located in the waiting room of the Breast Health Clinic to provide guidance and a listening ear to new patients.

The Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center, in partnership with UAB Medicine, offers personalized survivorship plans and a variety of supportive services across several local counties. The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge program also provides a free home-away-from-home for patients and their caregivers, ensuring that no one faces their cancer journey alone.

With ongoing support, education, and community engagement, the journey through breast cancer can feel a little less isolating, reminding everyone involved that they are not alone in this battle.
