The Heart of Birmingham: Anthony “AntSki” Williams’ Journey from Struggles to Success
In the vibrant streets of Birmingham, one man is making waves not just through music, but also through impactful community programs aimed at helping the youth. Meet Anthony “AntSki” Williams, a multifaceted individual who wears many hats. At 49 years young, he not only serves as the program manager at the RESTORE juvenile reentry program but is also the executive director of the Crescent Cultural Community Center located in Birmingham’s West End.
Empowering Young Minds
The driving force behind Williams’ passion lies in empowering young people. He firmly believes that understanding oneself and one’s roots can unlock a world of possibilities. “By knowing who you are and where you come from and tapping into your highest potential, you can achieve anything,” he shares, giving insight into his philosophy.
RESTORE provides essential skills such as goal-setting and conflict resolution to the youth, allowing them to navigate life’s hurdles more effectively. Williams goes beyond traditional mentorship; he actively engages in both teaching and learning, molding the next generation of leaders.
Unveiling a Musical Side
But wait, there’s more! Many may not know that Williams has a musical side as well. His song, “Man Business,” which delves into his personal journey into manhood, caught the attention of a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. This surprise achievement put him on the radar for a Grammy consideration in the category of Best Rap Song for 2025.
“It’s my ode to the arrival of manhood,” Williams explains. “I’m not telling anyone how to be a man but sharing my own evolution. The journey into manhood is unique for each individual, but I hope my song serves as a roadmap for young Black men.”
A Glimpse into His Life
Williams’ musical expression is tightly woven into his experiences. His genre? He describes it as “conscious-trap,” a blend that speaks to both heart and mind. “I’m one and the same,” he states, emphasizing how his life experiences fuel his creativity. Coming from a background steeped in challenges — poverty, incarceration, and personal loss — he uses music as a vehicle to share his story. “Music was everything. Those songs shaped my healing.”
Transforming Pain into Passion
His journey to self-discovery began while he was serving a seven-year sentence in various Alabama Department of Corrections facilities. A defining moment struck him hard when he learned of the tragic passing of his 2-year-old daughter, A’neJah, during his incarceration. “That was my wake-up call,” he reflects. “I needed to channel my pain into something meaningful.”
Williams started rapping in eighth grade, inspired by freestyle battles in his hometown. While he initially gravitated towards negative themes in his lyrics, a challenge from his late brother pushed him to refine his voice, leading him to write more positive and empowering songs. “Challenge accepted,” he chuckled, acknowledging that this shift became a hallmark of his later work.
A Family Life Reshaped
Now living in Birmingham’s East Lake area with his wife, Erin “Malachite” Williams, who also runs the Crescent Cultural Community Center, and their 9-year-old daughter A’neJah, he feels his life is aligned perfectly. “God brought my baby girl back around to me 22 years later, when I was ready for her,” Williams shares joyfully. “My family is my dream.”
The couple is deeply involved in their community, with Erin even serving as a trauma-informed certified yoga instructor. Together, they are dedicated to making a positive impact on the youth and families of Birmingham, encapsulating the essence of hope and transformation.
