The Birmingham community grapples with the aftermath of a tragic shooting incident.
A 23-year-old Birmingham woman, Tamiya Thomas, has been charged with capital murder following the January shooting death of James Leon Craig Jr., 40. The incident occurred during a verbal dispute on January 5, with Thomas arrested on February 27. The community is in shock as the investigation continues, raising calls for police accountability and reform in light of the tragedy.
In a shocking turn of events that has left the community reeling, a Birmingham woman named Tamiya Thomas, just 23 years old, has been charged with capital murder. This serious charge comes nearly two months after the tragic shooting death of James Leon Craig Jr., 40, which took place early in the morning on January 5, 2025.
The unfortunate incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 a.m. at the Craig family’s home located on 17th Court South. According to reports, a verbal argument escalated into chaos, leading to the gunfire that would ultimately result in the heartbreaking loss of Craig Jr.’s life. Alongside him, a second victim—a woman—sustained injuries but fortunately survived, escaping with non-life-threatening wounds.
After an extensive investigation, Thomas was apprehended on February 27, 2025, in the 1400 block of 32nd Street, Ensley. The arrest was made by the Special Enforcement Division’s Crime Reduction Team in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, showcasing the efforts made to resolve this case. Currently, Thomas is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond, while the community grapples with the reality of this crime.
Craig Jr.’s family and friends are understandably devastated. His twin sister, Jennifer Craig, has expressed her frustration, particularly about the ongoing investigation. She raised concerns about the failure to obtain surveillance footage from nearby cameras on the day of the shooting, suggesting that valuable evidence could have been overlooked. Despite the emotions running high, the Birmingham Police Department reassured the public that they are working diligently on the case and are committed to keeping the family informed.
In light of the incident, Jennifer Craig has taken the initiative to launch a petition calling for police accountability and reform. The community wants assurance that every resource was utilized during what should have been a straightforward investigation after such a tragic incident.
James Leon Craig Jr. is remembered fondly by those who knew him. He was a devoted father, brother, son, and friend, known for his infectious laughter and unwavering faith. His passing has left a void in the lives of many, and the community has rallied to commemorate his spirit during this trying time.
While the Birmingham Police Department continues to investigate this case, transparency has become a hot topic. In an effort to ensure the community gets the answers it deserves, the ABC 33/40 I-Team has filed a public records request for body camera footage from the responding officers at the scene.
As the investigation unfolds and Tamiya Thomas faces serious charges, both the Craig family and the Birmingham community await justice in what can only be described as a deeply tragic event. The hope is not only for accountability but also for a stronger community moving forward, united in remembrance and resolve.
