Birmingham’s community comes together to combat the winter chill with a coat drive organized by the Magic City Chapter of Alabama Power Service Organization. J. Patrick Reed led the initiative, delivering hundreds of winter clothing items to the Jimmie Hale Mission, which extends its services during the severe cold. The city officials and residents also contribute by donating essential winter gear, showcasing Birmingham’s unity and compassion during these challenging times.
Birmingham is showing its generous side this January as the local community comes together to help those in need during a biting cold snap. The Magic City Chapter of Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) recently stepped up in a big way, delivering hundreds of winter clothing items to the Jimmie Hale Mission between January 7-9, 2025.
At the heart of this chilly initiative was J. Patrick Reed, who organized a coat drive at the Alabama Power headquarters right in downtown Birmingham. With temperatures plummeting, it became increasingly clear that warm clothing was essential for those less fortunate. The team, with the help of generous donors, filled a sport utility vehicle to the brim with coats and other winter essentials, ready to be distributed to those in dire need.
The Jimmie Hale Mission is a beacon of hope in the community, providing a temporary shelter for men, women, and children facing homelessness. Their mission goes beyond just giving shelter; they offer a supportive environment where individuals can find refuge during life’s toughest moments. In light of the extreme cold, the mission has extended its services, accommodating those seeking shelter and providing food and free shuttle services during the frigid nights from January 6 through 9.
Birmingham isn’t just rallying through APSO; local elected officials and community organizations are also stepping in to lend a hand. With weather forecasts predicting temperatures to dip as low as 21 degrees, there’s a push for donations of essential winter gear. City officials from Vestavia Hills have put out an appeal for twin-size blankets, coats, gloves, hand warmers, fruits, and snacks. The call to action reflects the city’s commitment to ensuring everyone has access to the warmth they need during these challenging times.
The support for community members doesn’t end there. The Alabama Power Foundation is also making a notable impact by funding warming stations across the state to ensure that residents have a safe place during the bitter cold. In addition, the Alabama Business Charitable Trust has joined forces with various community agencies to help meet basic human needs, ensuring that nobody is left out in the cold.
